Did you inherit your dad's watch?

Image

My father was a bit of a watch guy.  I can remember, as a child, peeking in awe into his watch drawer.  He didn't have anything too fancy but this little Bulova was his "good watch."  It's the only one I have now, and I cherish it.  At 24mm wide it's pretty petite by today's standards, so it only gets worn on very special occasions.

Anybody else have your dad's old watch?

Thanks for sharing this, and your father’s Bulova. My father never wore a watch. So for us, it has worked the other way around. Several years ago I gifted him a watch, that he now sees as something for special occasions. I know one day it will find its way back to me, but I am happy to wait for a long time for that day.

This is my favorite of my dad's watches.  A while back I asked if he had some in a drawer and he sent a few to me.  My first watch was a Timex from that drawer on his workbench.  Most were 1990's and 2000's quartz. I shared some with my brother but kept the Zodiac. He is nearly 80 and hasn't worn a watch in about 15 years. He never cared about them and cell phones keep good time. All of his flex bands had damage on the back, or under, side.  He would always flip his watch around when he was about to do something that might damage it.

Omega seamaster electric 300hz from 1973, and an Omega speedmaster gold case blue dial.

·

That is an awesome story Morgan.  Sounds like something I might try, just to prove a point.  I'll remember not to now.  Thanks for the warning.  😀😀😉.  It says Waterproof on the dial, not ale-proof.

Not sure if you saw my post from earlier this morning over on Max's Budget Seiko thread.

My favourite budget Seiko.

Here's hoping you get a very long wait for that watch.   🙏

Cool story Aurelian.  Those old Speidel Twist-o-Flex bracelets were great.  My dad used to use them on his work watches.  I never realized that easily turning the watch to the inside was a bonus feature.  I'm going to try that trick on a vintage new-to-me 18mm Fixo-Flex that just came in.

The ‘dad watch’ is kind of a sad story for me.
Dad wore a Rolex Explorer his whole life, bought  with money he saved up as a beach lifeguard.  Growing up, I always saw it on his wrist.   Sometimes sneaking it on my wrist when it was on his dresser.  He typified the Explorer style by working variously as lifeguard/ tugboat captain/ commercial diver , sailboat broker, etc …

Last year, in his mid 80s he decided he wanted to sell it, to put the money into various retirement projects.

I had planned to buy it from him, but when I realized the value was around 20k, realized I couldn’t afford it. 🤯
So I sold it, obtaining the most money I could get for him (~20k)

So sadly, the fairly epic dad watch - isn’t in my collection.  😢

Silver lining: I’ve got my grandfather’s Vadis, and great grandfather’s Rolex and pocket watch that were gifted to me many decades years ago. (Ton of pix to follow, last pic of my dad doing his usual tricks)

Sounds like your sad story had a bit of a happy ending with some very cool pieces, despite missing out on that awesome Explorer.  Damn those crazy vintage Rolex prices eh?

Sounds like your dad is quite a guy has quite an adventurous life.

Thanks for sharing.  See you out on the Salish Sea.  😉

I have my grandfather's 1915 Hampden pocket watch. He must've bought it used or got it from his father, as he wasn't born until they 20s. I need to service it, but it works wonderfully.

Mum's 2006 Explorer (her 75th birthday present from me) reverted when she passed on

Dad (still with me) gave me his old RAF Weems watch when I was at university in the late 1980's

That's excellent that you've kept it the way it was and the story that goes with the watch is priceless 😆

·

I have and I invested in restoring it. An Omega 111.024 from the late 1960s...

That Omega is an absolute knockout.

Good call on the restoration. 👌

No, but I really wish I did.  My Dad died at 50 years old, so I would have cherished to have one of his watches.  Today I'm 58 and my Father-in-Law just passed at 86 and my Mother-in-law gave me his Movado.  I had it engraved and I wear it whenever I go to one of his Grandchildren's events, shows or parties.  It's like bringing him along with me.

What a beauty.  Love the engraving.  👌

Definitely a good idea to get a good service and keep it in tiptop shape for the future.

Wow - an original Movado Museum Watch.  That is such a cool blast from the past.  😎

I hope the grandchildren can appreciate the connection, but they don't inherit it for many, many years to come.  😉

Thanks. The Movado variant was the rarest. I think the seconds hand was replaced but during it’s time with the RAF. It’s a bit of a safe queen as it is the hardest watch I wear to repair

My dad wasn't able to afford anything fancy, and always wore inexpensive watches such as Timex.  I still have the Timex Indiglo that he was wearing when he passed away in 2013, and although it's the least expensive watch in my collection, it is beyond a doubt my most valuable. I keep it in a special watch box outside my home office and every night before I head off to bed, I open the watch box and turn on the Indiglo light as my way of keeping his memory alive.

I inherited several of Dad’s watches, but this was his favorite. He wore it at my wedding so it’s extra special. 1964 Longines. Beautifully made, but oh so tiny.

Yes I also inherited his love of Watches and bikes, had it restored to working order which involved internal clean up but left it with all original parts and condition I love it 😀 ❤️

My dad passed away in 2019; may God rest his soul. I miss my father, friend, and mentor. This Rolex is the last watch he wore, and I inherited it.

My dad was never a classy guy he never wear watches don't know why but always wear good bracelets and pinky rings. So so sad.😢
