First Omega and First Vintage Luxury watch

Just got this omega in the mail it’s my first Omega and first watch from a Luxury brand . What are we thinking ? Ref 166.0216 , it has some yellow on the sides on the case , I can’t tell if it used to have a gold plated finish or if due to use has developed that “ patina “ on the sides any thoughts on that ?

I'm guessing that it's more likely that it's plated brass and the plating has worn away.

·

Honestly, this is my favorite Omega ever produced. I’ve been wanting one for a while but it’s tough to filter through the Frankenwatches and the fakes!

·

Id say it's maybe gold plating that's worn or been polished off as I'm sure Omega didn't use brass cases after the 50's.

Of course it could just need a good clean, but difficult to tell from pics.

Either way, beautiful Seamaster, I'd certainly love to add one to my collection.

Good choice 👏🏻👏🏻🤩

You know, I'm new to this whole culture, and I'm not totally sold on most luxury watches, that being said, I actually like one! I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell you about your concern though, sorry 😔

·

The case is a steel one. If it had a gold plate case the dial would be gold tone. The discoloration on the sides is most likely staining from age. Hard to see in your photo though.

Classy 😍

Be careful if you send for servicing. Omega polished the gold off on a vintage Constellstion we sent them. Then tried to deny there had been gold there. Their own photos of the watch when it arrived proved them wrong. We got comped and they threw in a strap.

Oh wow , that sucks I have a swatch group repair center about 2 hours from me maybe I can show up there and they can give me more info on it , I’d like to know what it is , I’m hesitant to have it polished or anything like that but I’d like to know what the base metal is since it should be stainless steel but it seems it isn’t

It’s all good I’m glad you found this new piece enjoyable , you can most definitely find “ luxury “ watches at really good prices with some of these vintage pieces , I would encourage you to look online and if you find a piece you like do as much research as posible on it that way you make sure you get an authentic piece

Just added a couple of pictures of the side maybe you’ll be able to see it better there

It seems to be chrome plated from the photos you added. Which is odd because I'm pretty sure that bracelet is stainless steel. It is from the era when omega was out sourcing the case manufacturer to other countries, specifically Hong Kong. So possible it could have been.

Fantastic fit for your wrist

Beauty. Love these vintage omegas!

Hmm, probably even more confused now TBH 😂

Pretty sure Omega didn't use chrome plated brass cases that late, so I'll stick with my original assumption it's gold plated, but some of the other commenters on here know more than I do.

Obvious answer is to test it, but can't think of a non destructive way of doing that!

Personally I'd just wear it and love it for what it is, but I'm not particularly a stickler for originality - I just like it. 👍👍

At least they sorted you out in the end, but that is pretty shocking!!

Oh wow. So this could be a Frankenstein of a watch then ? Or rather that’s how Omegas were being done back then

Thank you for the input ! I appreciate it , there’s a swatch service center about an hour from me so maybe I’ll take it there and see if they can give me more information on it

Congrats on your #omega

That's just how omega operated then. lots of brands were struggling then and need to find ways to make things cheaper. I think it is highly unlikely it is a Frankenstein, as the parts seem to fit very well together. never impossible though, I have seen all sorts of strange things.

Cheers then , hopefully it’s all well but so far the watch has been fantastic

·

Very nice 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

·

My guess is that it was a 1970s two tone thing and those edges were plated to give a gold accent.

It’s a nice watch so I wouldn’t sweat overly if you can’t find an original catalogue picture, which would resolve it for you, just enjoy.

Yeah I’m working on just enjoying the watch , might take it to a swatch repair center in Miami that’s not too far from me and see if I can get the case resolved with them , but I am in love with the piece tbh
