How do you decide what watch goes?

I've seen a few posts lately about WCs reducing the size of their collection. Congratulations to those who have, I have mad respect for you. I've also heard people talking about and I've even said this when they have enough watches they'll do a one in and one out policy. Which at the time I said it I thought it sounded like an easy thing to do. Now I'm second guessing myself and l might be eating my words. Again mad respect for those who can do that.

So, I'm in the process of buying a watch which will bring me closer to my cap on the amount of watches I want. I'll be 2-4 away after this watch coming. Now, I'm thinking, I may not done buying the watches I want. I'm even considering upping my game to buy watches that are out of my comfort zone. I fell this is probably a natural progression of this game but it might cause a watch to go.

This is where the predicament lays if I want to acquire another couple watches. These watches are going to have to be keepers, watches I won't want to part watches. This stands to reason and of the watches I currently have in my box the same logic applies. If I have a box of watches the I don't want to part with how do I pick the first watch to go? How do I pick the first watch to trade up? To Crunchers who have sold watches or anyone else who has any good ideas on how to kick a watch to the curb?

I’ll pack a watch I’m thinking of parting with back into it’s box hide it under the bed and leave it there for around 3 months. If I don’t miss it it goes, if not it stays.

Yeah that's a good method. But I'm going to try and sell a watch I like in my box.

If I find myself having to be more intentional with picking that watch to wear and it not coming naturally I put it on the chopping block. I have been either selling on eBay or trading them into Topper.

Natural selection. You can't go wrong with that, solid advise. By the way how do you trade watches on Amazon? I'm probably going to trade up for watch that I can't justify buying outright.

I dunno if Amazon has a trading system, but Topper in CA takes my trades via UPS. They are an AD with lots of good brands. Near where I live, Burdeen’s is a good AD that does trades too.

At the time I purchased my Aqua Terra, I thought it was perfect (and for many it is in fact a grail). Over time I stopped wearing it. As a result, all I had was an object worth several thousand dollars laying about, dropping in value. The decision came quickly when I looked at the issue dispassionately. Sold it and bought a GS that I wear frequently and value more than I did the AT.

I've been thinking of Topper's. They're about hour and half away from my house. They don't carry the brand I'm looking for and I don't know if they would procure what I want. Maybe that's an excuse I need to go there and look at the GOs.

What brand are you looking for? Exquisite Timepieces in FL is another option too.

I try them on and if I still like a watch even a little bit, I keep it.

To get rid of them, it usually depends on if they keep time properly, if they are legible, if they are comfortable... and then it's all about if I consider them to be "age appropriate" now.

For example, I decided against any "massive" 50mm+ watches, because we all lose weight, muscle mass, and fat as we get older, so I won't ever have the frame to wear those again. Similarly, a lot of plastic "youth" watches had to go, and any of the really dirt cheap things from Chinese shopping sites.

In total, I got rid of half my collection last year and just donated them to charity shops. I didn't need the hassle of trying to sell them.

That's really cool you could clean house. No offense because I might get to that point one day myself but that why I'm trying this now to stop myself from getting there.

I still like what I have. I'm going to have to slow down on the purchases which I think will happen after I fill the box. I think one big thing is my watch number is getting smaller. So the watches out of reach are starting to cal.

I track how often I wear my watches. If I don't wear a watch for 5% of days in a calendar year, I try to sell it. 5% of days is about 18 days, so just over once per month. To me, that doesn't justify owning something worth $200, let alone $2,000 or more.

I find that my optimal collection is somewhere in the range of 7-8 watches. This year I have worn 8 watches 6.8% of days or higher. Those get semi-regular wear. I have three watches this year that are at 1.6% or less, and those are the three on the chopping block.

I try to take the emotion out of it. The only exceptions are watches that were inherited, gifts or milestone acquisitions, but usually my milestone watches are those among my most worn in the collection.

Best of luck. Can't wait to see the new additions! I am sure they're going to be amazing.

Thinking of doing some thinning myself. Nice discussion here. Definitely ideas that can help!

Ones I haven’t worn in months get put on the chopping block, I wear them one last time to find out why I don’t wear them often, then I take them to either family members or to charity, I don’t live somewhere where getting rid of things or selling used things is a thing (weird I know) and selling online isn’t convenient for me, that’s how I pick and reduce my collection.

It's a minefield tbh. The one watch I was absolutely, definitely going to get rid of this year was my Seamaster. Right now it's probably the watch that gets the most wrist time out of them all 😀

SMP is on top of my list to go and I still wear and enjoy it.

I'm at 9 now but want a few more. That's going to be the trick. To stay in the limit.

That’s exactly what I’m trying to say - there is always another nice watch out there. There is always a cool new car/truck. I’m doing my mantra and move on. When months go by and mantra doesn’t help - apparently I love the watch and I buy a damn thing ;)

Cherers mate. We are in the same boat. 😂

That's very interesting. I try to buy smart and I want to keep the watch assuming over time I like it. With this idea the collection will only get larger which I don't want. I think funding is always an issue but it's not the end all. I'm perfectly happy in price range that can I reach multiple times a year but once I start looking past that range I get uncomfortable. I have a hard time justifying spending more.

I think as long as you're not dipping into money for the mortgage, or for living expenses or for some other important goal, then it's ok. Wrestled with this struggle all year as I had some life expenses to take care of. But once I had done that, I was able to set money aside for my next purchase.

I don't have a set number I want to stay at but I recently sold a few of my watches that never see any wrist time anymore. I have bought several watches this year that I love so it was time to let some go. The first few were easy but I am going to sell a couple more that I am honestly not going to wear so I might as well sell them to someone who will wear them and enjoy them.

Good for you. Cleaning house is always good. Good luck on the next ones

·

I recently sold 2 Seikos that were unworn. And they were not getting wrist time any time soon.

I would like to keep my collection to about 12. I may need to sell my Seiko Mods. Or I can sell them as parts.🙁

·

Forced rank order...sell the one at the bottom. Just rip the band-aid off with no regrets...can always buy it again.

True that. I'm going to give it try when I'm ready.

If it's not getting worn, I consider selling. For me, that's at least on wrist 5% of all days, or about 1.5x per month. That's rule #1.

The second rule is redundancy. If I want to buy a watch that makes my first watch someone obsolete, then I a) reconsider if I want that new watch and b) decide to part with the old watch.

I really want a Grand Seiko Snowflake. I want a spring drive and of all the Grand Seiko's, the Snowflake is the one that speaks to me the most with it's perfect proportions, light weight and beautiful dial.

But I already have a white dialed watch that I wear in more dressy situations in my Oris Big Crown Pointer Date. I love that watch. My love for the Oris keeps me from buying the Grand Seiko because I know if I get the GS, the Oris won't get any wrist time at all. These two simple rules keep me from overextending my collection and ending up with pieces that don't get worn.

I'm trying to keep mine manageable is all I know. What that is will be determined. The more I think about it the more I realize I do t know shit. One day I want more, the next I have to many.
