Summary of Seiko Divers Organized

Everything about Seiko Divers in one post. If you've ever been interested in Seiko Divers, read this post to get a quick summary. This will go into details into the following models: Turtle, Tuna, SKX, Monster, Marinemaster, and Samurai. We'll cover the essential models forming the current Seiko Diver lineup, including the first Diver, the Marinemaster.

Vintage

In the '50s and '60s, the diver watch market was dominated by brands like Blancpain, Rolex, and Omega. Seiko entered this arena with the historic release of its first diver watch, the Marinemaster. After its release, the iconic 4 o'clock crown 6215 model emerged, reborn as the SBDX001, known as the Marinemaster. The first high-beat diver title was achieved with the addition of a high-beat movement a year later.

The Turtle, nicknamed for its resemblance to a turtle and its robust durability, excellent movement, and affordability, became a staple during the Vietnam War. It gained worldwide popularity after appearing in the movie "Apocalypse Now." As years passed, the initial disdain for models like the Turtle turned into a desire to own one.

The Tuna, resembling a tuna can, was developed in response to professional divers' feedback that earlier models couldn't withstand depths beyond 300m, leading to broken glass or dented cases. Seiko then divided its diver development into two groups: one for 150m water resistance and the other for professional divers with over 300m resistance. The Tuna became the first diver watch designed for professionals.

Seiko Divers officially comprise the "Big Three" of the brand, with the Turtle's popularity leading to the release of Turtle II in 1976. The current Turtle lineage includes the SRP777, evolving into the King Turtle. We're all familiar with the 7548 model right? The SKX013 originates from this model and becomes one of the most sold diver model worldwide.

This marks the end of what I call the "vintage Seiko" generation. Vintage diver watches from Seiko are not easily released as standard models but are sold under the "SLA" code name, signifying high quality and premium pricing.

Neo-Vintage / Modern?

Finally comes the beloved SKX line which is popular to this day for its design and affordability, targeting enthusiasts until its production ceased in 2019 after 23 years. It was reincorporated into the Seiko 5 Sports line as the SRPD.

The Monster, known for its bezel resembling monster teeth, was very popular model during the neo-vintage era. So popular that it went had three generation of design modifications. As Seiko reorganized its lineup, it was integrated into the Prospex line and discontinued. It now is available through the SBDY line.

The Marine Master, introduced in 1967 with a significant design heritage, saw its retail price soar as Seiko shifted its pricing policy, leading to a decline in its competitive edge despite improved quality. Similar to the likes of the SKX and Monster line, the Marine Monster integrated into the Prospex line. Having gone through model names SBDX001, SBDX0017, SBDX023, the Marine Master name has now disappeared into the history books.

The Samurai, with its angular face and sword-shaped hands, has a strong presence among modern Seiko divers, often positioned as a rival to the Turtle.

The reinterpretation of the first Diver, the Marinemaster, with modern upgrades as the SLA017, sold out instantly worldwide due to its popularity. The true diver watch from Seiko diverges from the general lineup, making those who have tried this model a rare group.

Seiko's future plans, leaked in 2020, revealed a strategy that rendered many previous collectors' investments obsolete with reissues of the Marinemaster at a fraction of the price. This plan includes multiple "betrayals," culminating in a trilogy of shock releases that dramatically undercut previous limited editions' prices.

I hope this was helpful in helping bring a bit of light into the rich and robust Seiko diver history and I welcome any correction or feedback!

I’m glad you found it informative!

The Turtle isn't in Apocalypse Now though, it's a 6105, not a 6309. Different case shape (not to be a nerd about it)

Technically true, the watch is a Captain Willard but it’s built off the Turtle concept with the cushion case

I'm confused and I must respond with a Simpsons meme.

Very nice post! I just picked up a SPB317 and will probably pick up a tuna can soon 😬. I believe it goes Silverwave, 62 mas, etc. While the monoblock cases are super cool, they ended up failing for deep dives (blowing out the crystal) so they went back to the drawing board and came back with the Tuna years later for professionals. Fratello has a great video on this stuff.
