Tried out a Rolex. My Alpinist is safe.

Let me me state my bias right up front and say that I’m not a big Rolex fan for a myriad of reasons. However, a very posh new store opened here that sells high end used watches. 90% Rolex. I stopped in and they were super cool and chatted watches and had me try a few on. The one that’s always appealed to me most was the Explorer II. After trying it on… I mean… It’s really nice. Like, REALLY nice, but my Alpinist fills that roll at least 85% as well. I left wanting an Alpinist GMT more than wanting to sell 2/3 of my collection for an Explorer II. I’m not going to jump on the train of saying that Rolexes are overpriced. I don’t think they are at MSRP. But I guess I’m just not that guy.

They aren't for everyone. It's good you gave it a shot before writing them off.

I’ve never gotten much into micros. I’ve had a couple Loriers and a Zelos, but I’ve always gone back to Seiko and Squale and my one Omega.

That 15% may nag at you and tug at your subconscious over time.

Yeah if I had infinitely more funds than I do, I may get one someday.

Go for it if that's what you want. Maybe you can make it happen sooner than you think. I will share that my Explorer II is my favorite among favorites. I wear it more than any other watch I own.

·

Yes those new Alpinist GMT's are handsome 👍🏻

We’ll see… I have a Seamaster and I think I’d add an Aqua Terra before a Rolex. Or a Cartier if I wanted something different.

Well, I don't know what to tell you since Rolex is my favorite brand, but good for you for trying it on. The Explorer II is definitely one of my favorites with the white dial especially

Yeah, I wish they had the white. I left liking Rolex more than I did when I walked in. Just not quite enough if that makes sense.

I like my Alpinists more than I like most. I wouldn’t say they are the favorites amongst my watches, because all watches that stay in my collection are tied among favorites. Something about the face of an Alpinist that makes it stand out.

·

I don't know either of these watches but will hazard a guess. The Seiko will be 90% of the watch for 10% of the cost. The bracelet will be most of that 10%.

Am a big fan of the classic green/gold Alpinist and would choose it over any Rolex, any day ... but that's just me! 😀

I have one of those too lol.

Trying on a watch and living with a watch I believe to be vastly different. But your a Seiko guy, so no harm no foul. I’ve tried to keep a Seiko in my collection and feel like I don’t have the same level of appreciation as some and wish I did. May be a grand Seiko or the right Prospex will do me right

So your telling me if both were free, you would honestly take a Seiko Alpinist over any Rolex? I’m sorry but I gotta call bullshit on that. Unless your some Seiko spirtual warrior and if you are good for you!

Yes and that ain't no bull-puck ... unless my end goal was to get a free watch that I was then going to sell; then I'd be four kindsa stupid NOT to take the Rolex! LOL!

The Alpinist has everything going for it that appeals to my tastes ... it's different, unique even, somewhat quirky, and at the same time beautiful. I like my cars, motorcycles and women the same way 😉 😎

·

Fully agree, I get get a lot more bang for the buck elsewhere 👍🏻

·

The explorer is the best looking Rolex imo. Also agree on the price.

Be careful applying that to women. Different and quirky becomes CRAZY real quick. :)

True… I like mine with a fat ass and a bad attitude 😁
