“One-Watch Collection”

Are there any other hobbies where they talk about a “one-item collection”? I mean specifically calling it a “collection.” Like, I can see arguments over “the only car you need” etc. But the word “collection” has a definition of more than one, typically, you know? “I have a 2012 Seiko Riptider and it does everything I need and want,” is totally fine, but calling it a “collection” is always an unusual usage to me. Note that “unusual” is not at all a criticism, i’m just curious about the term in this community and what the difference may be when compared with other hobbies.

(“Riptider” would be a cool watch name.)

Agreed!

Semantics. I suppose if you were a vintage car enthusiast and you’ve restored one and take it to car shows and what not…maybe consider yourself a collector. It’s just a word. Enthusiast, collector, aficionado, etc. I don’t think it implies that you have multiples.

I guess to me it does, but I tho k I know someone who could answer relative to cars, tbh.

The obvious oxymoron is deliberate. It's an excepted term used to describe a situation where you no longer need more than one watch.

·

I think if you have 1 watch but are “into” watches you are an enthusiast but you have to have more than 1 to be classed as a collector. However may people have 2 or more watches that they use I.e. a GADA and a dress watch but are not “into” watches are not collectors.

·

I think it’s just a semantics catchphrase that gets clicks. Like a “imagine if you were able to reduce your collection to one watch” I could see myself having a 3 watch collection but one and done feels pretty wild to me even from a functionality standpoint. Having a daily (work), night/weekend, and gym/activity/beater watch would probably be the ideal 3 watch collection for me

Riptider would be an awesome dive watch name

Yeah i understand that but I’m curious if this is a “watch enthusiast” thing or something other hobbies say.

Sure, but the term “one watch collection” really has a meaning of its own. It’s not speaking of a collection per se, but more a statement that this is the one watch that meets all of my needs. No need or want for any others because I’m satisfied and no longer looking. I personally have a one wife collection in that regard 😉😂

Lol. I know what it means but the terminology seems unique to watches from what i see,

·

I just like to use the terms to there definition, collecting or collections would define more than one item, you can't have a one watch collection but you can have one watch,if you aspire to buy more and do you are a collector, and have started a collection 🙄😂👍

Yeah that’s what I am feeling, too. “The only watch I need” or “The perfect GADA” seem sufficient without misusing a word lol. Im the child of an English teacher and a librarian. And I don’t “mind” it, just more am curious about it

·

Pocket knife collectors can be very similar, where finding and carrying "one" is the paramount dream concept, but I don't think I've heard anyone reference that as a "one knife collection."

·

My interpretation would be: you start off with a collection, but then reduce to one watch that will do it all... A one-watch-collection.

You could say it's not a collection per definition, because it's only one watch, but you had a collection before, so this is what's left of it.

·

One of anything is not a collection. It's not semantics, it's just a woeful lack of English; derived from the Latin colligere, meaning "gather together". Maybe if you take a hammer to the single watch you can gather together a collection of watch parts.

·

I have seen it used by others in fountain pen and camera groups as well. I have never really thought about it before because I assumed I understood what the person meant when they asked the question.

·

If you own a Laurent Ferrier , Moser, MBF, GF, IWC , GO, ALS, Rolex, Omega , Patek ,VC, GS ,Roger Smith etc .. not one Seiko or Casio or Citizen, your a collector…. You been through years of other watches and end up with your personal best one watch …. This isn’t a fact just the lense through which I personally see the semantics of a one watch collection.

Look at my reply what do you think in terms of a temporal idea of a collection that I have proposed, a bit more nuanced than what you’re stating . Collection not to the observer but to the owner , their POV over time .

·

I have a Peugeot estate (station wagon). It's my one car collection 🤣

One of anything is not a collection.

Three or more in my opinion qualifies.

I'm at ~400 so maybe I'm a bit biased. 😏

Maybe people are stuck with one watch collections because you bought them all! 😳🤣

At 50 or so i feel like I never hear to wear any of mine. I’d imagine at some point you stop worrying about that?

From the owner’s memory of previous watches in and out he can be a collector, who is going to police that owner’s memory that he/she is a collector because currently there is only one watch in his physical possession?

I believe model train folks are ‘enthusiasts’ as well.

Pardon my silly question but do pigs fly? I would call it start of a collection ;)

Well said.

I do enjoy the diversity of answers. From “Its just a word” to a description of the intent as to why the term exists.

Correct! This question is about semantics, the branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning.

Ah. Thank you. I’m glad I used the word correctly then 😁

Yes I stopped worrying about that years ago.

I do rotate often and frequently I wear three different watches a day.

I strongly believe people should buy and wear what they want, can afford and what makes them happy.

I don't believe in buying a watch only as an investment to be locked away in a vault.

A collection describes the bringing together of more than one item in my understanding. I hardly know anyone arguing on that definition outside of watch youtubers and other influencers that need to upset an audience to get the clicks. One who no longer collects but loves watches would be an enthusiast maybe in my book. But hey, pick any labels for yourself out there that you’re comfortable with.
