Update/Review On my quartz beater

I don't see much talk about quartz let alone a casio chipu (cheap), one that is not considered vintage or a piece of quartz side of watch history.

So, I would like to add one.

The other day ago I was hunting for a day-date watch that needs no maintenance, a set-and-forget, a beater with a throwaway price.

Then I found one.

It was this Casio 1239D-7A (7A is a color code they came in 3 colors; Blue, Black, and Silver; all sunburst)

I could have more and better choices if it wasn't for my 6" wrist (15mm) the closest thing within the wearable lug-to-lug range were the old Seiko 5 models (But I needed a quartz here for the thinnest and lowest cost possible).

Here is the general specs

Thickness : 9.2mm

Dial diameter : 38.5mm

Lug width : 20mm

Lug to lug : 42.6mm

Case material : ion plated not steel I think only the case back is a stainless steel

Crystal : Mineral Glass

Water Resistance: Splash Resistant

Strap : Folded Stainless Steel

Since I'm a noob here I will talk only about my personal experience.

(1) Strap is bad. I instantly thrown it away and buy a $1 "Garmin" silicone strap to put on while waiting for a leather strap to arrive. It worked! I would try a black or a dark blue Accent rubber Hirsch once they restock/updated their shipping method. But for now this works well and it seems to me that this model could actually be a strap monster (especially if somehow they decide to make a white dial after all these years).

(2) Day-Date window is rather small. This is one of my required function since I tend to forget date of the week eventho I work an office-bounded job every weekdays. and it's such a choir to look up the phone (everytime I pick my phone up it misses it's recharge opportunity). So, a minus point for that.

(3) Legibility. It's ok. as when you take a look the indicies will look dark and the dial will be flare with its sunburst treatment. In natural light this is good, an ok legibility, looks good even. But in low light it is very hard. It gave me a headache from the flare. I see the flare but can't make out the hands from the first glance. To me it means that there is limited operational angle (probably the same as any other sunburst dial out there). Also a minus point.

(4) Aesthetically. My grail watch is a Max Bill (Yes, I don't have that kind of money to outright purchase a $1,200 watch) So when I see a design that serve specific function and nothing in excess I'm going to like it. and this watch does pretty much that. From the choices of Big indices, military time (which is just added 12 to everything) and the 60-minute which is multiplying every indices with 5. The most obvious one to me is the latter (because that's where the minute hand and second hand are pointing at).

(5) Caliber. Unfortunately I couldn't find info on this but it's japanese quartz and we all know that it's basically a Nokia3310 we keep replacing the battery when it's dead and then three decades passed the watch still run, no fuzz.

(6) Price. Here comes the best part. it cost me $32 for this new with tags with 2-year guarantee buying it from a local mall. I know this specific model is targeting a lower-income market so you may not see it or allowed to see it on the casio website when they geo you. Just search 1239D see a close-up look of these thing on youtube. (also there seems to be a knockoff version running around the internet for $7 I don't know why it's already cheap but I will try those once this one got beaten up).

That's a beautiful watch and what a great value! You can even use it as a dress watch. Nice find! 👍 💯

It took a bit of mental-prowess to translate your prose…but in the end it was a good read. Much respect!

·

Nothing wrong with a value quartz clip, I have a few. Casio straps pretty much not the best, although I am sure there are exceptions. It looks good on that strap, and I am sure it will go with a fair few colours etc. Great buy !

·

Beautiful silver sunburst dial for the price! 👍

·

That's a good looking watch for the money and definitely looks elevated in quality with a good rubber strap. I agree a simple clean looking watch like should be a strap monster for rubber and leather and nato straps. Enjoy and thanks for sharing

·

I think that its a great watch.

And I'm also not so sure about quartz watches being under represented here. A solid third of my collection are quartz watches and I post them here regularly and I can see that the percentages of quartz watches in the daily WRUW is very respectable even without my participation.

Wow! Great watch and great post! Love the look and design, and I've been really appreciating my quartz watches lately.

·

Great choice, classic design and beautiful silver dial. 😍

The G-Shock below has the same problem of legibility at night and in low light. The hands disappear, and the included light does not help very much. I like it the same 😃

Watches with small day / date are very common.

The funny thing is, unless you were a watch person, that could pass for an expensive watch. It's really nice looking and can be worn in a suit, office or a ditch. I have many quartz watches and you really can't beat the maintenance schedule. lol. Zero

That’s the model known as “Poor Man’s Calatrava”. I’ve got the one in gold, reference MTP1183Q. Sweet!

Had to take a second look to confirm this is a Casio watch ⌚

·

reminds me that I need to replace my beater watch. I think it got beat on one to many times. It randomly keeps time. lol

·

That's a sharp looking watch and super reliable Casio . A great buy

Already looks good on that strap.
