7 weeks on the Wrist - no greed for more

Hi Crunchers! Me again- a Santos story once more.

It is seven weeks that i own this beauty now.

I want to let you know about my feelings that this particular watch gave me.

1st - the pain

When I convinced myself I deserve to gift myself this watch thoughts were haunting me: this is too much money for your Hobby.

But eventually I contacted my AD and triggered the process. Sometimes you just have to celebrate your milestones. Otherwise it would just remain an ordinary expensive collectible if i bought it any time else than this specific month.

2nd - the doubt

I went to the AD and he presented me the watch along with the black laquered Santos Dumont and a Santos Dumont in L and XL.

I was tempted to go for the Santos Dumont L instead. But would it feel the same? I love bracelets and there is no option for the Dumont to be equipped with one. Would it be worth the 3k price difference to make that sacrifice? My wife would be happy if i saved this money…but i didn‘t. The feeling when i left, the Santos de Cartier in my backpack, was still mixed.

Over the next days the feeling stayed. I loved the piece, but something with the winding felt off. (See older posts) it cleared itself and the feeling I got wearing it, looking at it, cherrishing it got more and more into a steady honeymoon.

3rd - the conviction

I overcame the initial doubt and pain about spending that much money on my hobby, feeling selfish towards my wife.

I got more and more convinced to have made the perfect decision going for this watch, instead of a Breitling, a Tudor or another Longines. All great brands, great heritage and great craftsmanship. But none of their watches would fit myself that well. The way it sits on my wrist, hides beneath shirt or sweater or wears with a t-shirt is just phenomenal.

I was curious if i liked the roman numerals as its my first watch showeing these. And i can say: I do.

The watch feels modern, classy and dressy at the same time. But it never gets too loud. Its always decent and many of my friends, not being watch enthusiasts, did not recognize this watch as an expensive accessory or consider me bragging around with it. That is actually very important for me as I don’t want to upset friends who cant afford one, showing any kind of wealth they could not yet claim for themselves.

4th - the hunting continues- does it not?

Having shared my doubtful feelings and conviction about this watch there is one more thing we as enthusiasts have to admit. Hunting is part of the journey and probably core of the passion. It is what makes the purchase act that special. You saw it, you chose it, you chased it, you aimed at it and - catching $ - you bought your trophy.

Over the courses of the past three years I was very hyped about new releases and were all over the place with my wishes what i want and why.

Idid not expect it to change. But… it did.

I am so happy with this timepiece that I am close to say that it could have been my exit watch.

But you’ll never know what other brands hide behind the next corner. So we will see.

For now there is no itching, no desire, no need for anything else, as this watch is perfect and i have not seen anything that could beat it on all fields I consider important.

For those of you who made it here: Thanks for reading. Let me know if you have made similar experiences with your latest purchase or if you think that there is nothing like an exit watch at all.

Cheers,

Nick

Beautiful! Any watch that can quell the greed for awhile is a good one, imo.

Great choice. Looks great on leather and metal - so many different situations to wear it. I have one myself and love it. It’s definitely a keeper (I thought my IWC portaguser was my exit watch but sold it for this one when I noticed it was so huge on my wrist)

Medium santos perfect size.

Still hunting for daily wear though….

Wearing mine today. Pure class!

I have been considering going for the Santos Medium and selling the rest. Thoughts?

My experience was a bit different. I had admired it for awhile online, asked my AD to get in the model I wanted and then pulled the trigger. I switched out the straps which took months but eventually got three that I liked (blue and green alligator and tan leather). It’s a great watch and I’m quite smitten. Fits great, it’s much more versatile than I expected and it does elicit many compliments.

I am a long time fan of the Cartier Santos, purchased my first in the late 80s, bought a Rolex 2Tone Datejust at the same time, embarrassed to admit it but bought the Santos to get a better discount on both watches. Almost 40 years later still own that first Santos, adding two other iterations but Rolex is history. Uncertain about my loyalty in the years to come. The Santos duo time just launched is fitted with a modified Selitta movement, a bit disappointing for the list price.

Congrats,nice piece

Congrats! Welcome to the #cartier family! I still love mine... but after the honeymoon phase ends, you'll be back hunting for the next one. 😉 For me, I enjoy the journey as much as the destination!

Great choice! I can relate to your thoughts and emotions. Although I still love my other watches, the Santos has dominated wrist time since I've bought it.

Its effortless versatility is hard to beat; often choice for casual leisure, work, wedding, and vacation. The convenience of being able to change straps without tools makes it favorable as well.

Enjoy it!

The IWC is beautiful and i would like it too - but it is indeed too big for my tiny 16.5cm wrists.

My thoughts are pretty much lined out above. The thing is, it is not really an entire daily beater because you will always be cautious when doing anything else than regular household work or desk diving.
