Hey From the Bay

As a kid growing up, I sported either a Casio or Timex. After college it was Swatch, Gucci and Movado (it was the early 90's  😊).

Once I got into the job market the cell phone was my watch but for dinners out and hitting the bars I flexed with my Patek high end homages that my father picked up during business trips overseas.

When smartwatches hit the scene I was an early adopter with the Samsung Galaxy watch.  My love for automatic watches was sparked when my father passed my grandfather's 1952 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 6085 Red "officially" along to me.

I sold all of my other watches with the exception of the Rolex and purchased a Seiko 5 SNZF17 Sea Urchin and never looked back.

Looking forward to learn new stuff, more modding tips, and sharing stories with everyone and contributing where I can.

Welcome to the asylum from another Bay Area denizen.  What a beautiful gift to have passed down to you from family.

What inspired the downsizing and what are the plans for the future (if there are any)?

Hello and welcome! The Seiko Sea Urchin is a great choice! Can we see it? Also, what brands are you looking to add in the future?

Thanks for the kind welcome, neighbor. As soon as I got bit by the automatic watch bug, I sold the bulk of my very dated quartz watch "accumulation" to fund my new addiction.

I didn't see a buy/sell thread here, but I still have 1990 era Gucci, Movado, Swatch and Citizen to part with especially now that I purchased three new watches in the past 4 weeks. 🤑 I need to take a hiatus on new purchases and get back to my first attempt at Seiko mod. I'm so embarrassed, I've had my SRPD79 sitting apart on the workbench since December.

Thanks! Agreed. Love everything about the Sea Urchin so much so that it doesn't leave me desirous of a Submariner.  I'm a simple man with a simple budget...

Pictured is my SNZF17 with a low dome sapphire AR crystal and strapped with a BluShark silicone racing strap with my SNKE51K1 with a purple AR sapphire crystal strapped with a Barton 007 NATO (all mods done by my jeweler).

As far as other brands, I have my first San Martin in transit. Whenever I find myself deserving and decide to reward myself with a next level timepiece, I'd look first at Tudor or Omega.

I am also a lover of budget watches and a huge Seikophile. I have a watch box full of Seiko watches, including an SNKL23.

If you are looking for brands to look into, I do have a suggestion for a newer microbrand. As someone who appreciates a good value watch, may I suggest the Islander house brand from Long Island Watch? It began with a series of SKX homages, but they are doing more original designs recently and offer a great price for a great watch.

Welcome my friend and what a great watch to be gifted, a treasure to be sure 💯

Welcome.  It is so cool to own a family heirloom watch.
