Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

Fairly new to wristwatches. Got gifted a GA2100 and looked up how to set it on YouTube. The algorithm then proceeds to bombard me with watch content recommendations. Then I got Covid and had to isolate for 2 weeks. I watched so many videos about watches during that time that came out of it and immediately rewarded myself with a Tissot PRC Powermatic 80.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

The first one I can remember having was a Takara Kronoform Time Machine. It the one you could pop off the bracelet and transform it into a robot. Yes, it was indeed awesome. The first one I ever bought with my own money was a Zodiac Streamline ZO3901 to celebrate getting a new job and jumpingnover to the industry where I eventually built my career. Yes, I still have it, yes it’s beat up to hell, and yes I still wear it relatively often.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

This is only mildly interesting but a few years ago, a friend asked me to help pick out a watch for him to wear for someone’s wedding. I suggested the Orient Sun and Moon V1. He wore it to that wedding and then never again. He recently unearthed it from storage and decided to give it to me as he now prefers smartwatches.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

The same set of advice I give people getting into sneakers: - Fit is everything, whenever possible, try it on before you buy. - Buy what you like, hype is cool and all but it shouldn’t be your primary consideration. - Take a good look around. Do not limit your consideration to what everyone else seems to be fixated on. You’ll find a ton of great options if you can keep an open mind. - They’re meant to be worn so please, do wear them. Do not baby them too much. Put some stories on ‘em! - Be mindful of your spending; you don’t need to buy every new thing that everyone else says is cool. There’s a lot more to the hobby than acquisition. Take the time to enjoy the collection you have.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Citizen has been really killing it lately! Hoping to add a Tsuyosa to the collection soon. Longines also has some really compelling offerings. I’ve also very recently become a big fan of Armitron’s retro collection. I just bought a Griffy and a Ridgemont and the quality for the price is astounding!

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

Right now I’m saving up to buy an Omega Speedmaster. No special reason; I just think they look amazing. The history is just gravy. Still, I wouldn’t call that a grail per se because it’s relatively attainable. If I had to name a grail it’d be the Omega Equinoxe, a reverso like dual dial with an analog face on one side and a digital face on the other. It’s damn near impossible to find one in pristine condition but I really really want one. I think they’re gorgeous and they represent a truly exciting time in horololgy.
