Ideal wrist size for a tank

Hey fellow crunchers!

I enjoy the look of tank watches and how classy and dressy it is. (Picture above is not my wrist btw)

Would like to hear from you all if my 7โ€ wrist would be considered too large for these dressy pieces.

My daily go tos are usually 42mm to 44mm.

Any 7โ€ wrist shots with a tank is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for reading ๐Ÿ˜€

I think the Tank looks great on you. In fact, maybe it is the angle of the pic, but I think you could have gone one size smaller and still had a fabulous look. No worries on the one you got!

ยท

Square/Tonneau cases wear bigger than specs due to their shape.

And I am a firm believer in most have a shocking range in what they can wear.

I go from 32mm up to 50-ish mas o menos.

Thanks for sharing! Haha the picture above isnโ€™t my wrist or my watch ๐Ÿ˜… just a reference to tank watches ๐Ÿ˜€

If you love it, wear it. I have an 8โ€ wrist and will someday own a Tank Louis, which may look tiny to others, but Iโ€™ll wear it happily.

Tanks anyone????

I feel they should be postage stamp sized. If one doesn't know what a postage stamp is or what the size is, they are probably going to favor things larger than I would.

Mohammed Ali, Yves Saint laurent, and Jeff Goldblum all had large wrists and small Cartier. I am personally pro small Tank on big man.

For the vast majority of of people & vast majority of watches it is NOT the wrist size that matters; it's the confidence to pull it off.

Sure, a 60mm on a 5.5 inch wrist is going to be 1 in 10,000 or less that can do that. But for typical size watches on typical sized wrists (that 80% in between the extremes), nearly everyone can pull them off if they believe they can.

ยท

I generally go one or two sizes smaller for a dress watch.

For divers, GMTs, chronos etc I can quite comfortably carry off 42mm; whereas a 38mm diver looks disproportionately tiny on me (a BB54 looks like a child's toy).

For a dress watch, I find 38mm is the upper limit; and I'll regularly go down as small as 34mm..

A dress watch isn't supposed to have presence on the wrist. It's supposed to be a subtle accent to the rest of your outfit, not a statement that screams "LOOK AT ME, BITCHES, I'M WEARING A WATCH!"

I have a 7-1/2" wrist and love my tank styled watches. I own 4 in this style and all are a delight to wear.

I wear a Tank Francaise on a colorful Nato strap in the summer and it is really sets it off nicely.

Good luck choosing just one!

Santos for mine โ€ฆ. Or I adore this one from our Editor Kaysia โ€˜s collection

I have a 7.5โ€ wrist but I love my Tank Large. IMO a tank should look a little small and delicate.

ยท

Not even close for your wrist to be too large.

ยท

It's your wrist, you paid for the watch, if you like the way it looks, that's all that matters.

ยท

I normally add up the diagonal measurement and the horisontal measurement and divide by 2, that gets you in the ball park of how big the watch would be if it was round. this is great for figuring out approximately how big the watch will look on your wrist before buying ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜‰

This is my old Sekonda square which is 28x28 mm, and with the calculations it should wear like a 35 mm. I've got a 6.1" wrist and i think it wears pretty much like a 35 mm. But you can judge for yourself on the picture below ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Image

PS. Don't know how the calculation works on rectangular watches though, but i would assume they would wear a little smaller than a square one. Maybe go vertical plus horizontal divided by 2 as the corners dont protrude as much from the silhouette as the square.

ยท

When comparing dial sizes, for square watches you need to compare the length of the diagonal when comparing it to a round watch (recall your Pythagoras). The Cartier tank comes in two sizes if I recall correctly, and the large one is too large for most men. I suppose, the likes of Avi Silverberg could wear it, but with a 7 inch wrist size - it is a no.

I have got a couple of (cheaper) tanks. My Seiko tank is 28.4x31.6mm in dimensions and it wears like a 42mm round watch. For my 6.5inch wrist it wears a bit too large, considering it is a dress watch. This applies particularly to tank-style watches that have a flat back and thus sit fully on your arm. I have an even larger tank that still wears ok because the back is chamfered.

It's funny, but I do say that a lot!

ยท

To be honest, with a 7" wrist I would probably go for the "large" and not the XL option. The Tank XL is an absolute monster of a watch... being rectangular (rectangular watches have a bigger surface) and formal looking.

ยท

I have a large Solarbeat and a 6 ยฝ wrist. It feels and looks perfect to my eye.

You get it! My wife says it's "strange and off-putting!"

Just tell her itโ€™s โ€œcharming and quirkyโ€; followed by โ€œDO YOU DARE CHALLENGE ME?!โ€

(Bonus points if you do the last part in German)

Is that a tank must XL

Great question - a few things to consider:

1) Wrist circumference does play a big role, but most people forget that wrist SHAPE plays a major component on how a watch will sit and therefore look on your wrist. This is also why I absolutely roll my eyes SO hard whenever people instantly write-off or discredit a watch solely based on its dimensions on paper. Wrist size AND SHAPE coupled with watch dimensions, dial to bezel ratio, lug to lug distance and overall watch thickness all combined will look and feel different as a collective. It's not one thing, it's many things ๐Ÿ˜€

2) Not to say that asking for input from others is bad, it's good - but at the end of the day don't let anyone tell you what looks good on you - your money, your passion, your likes, your wants, your watch, your style. You do you ๐Ÿค

3) I've got a 6.75 inch wrist and I bought the Cartier Tank Must XL. I absolutely love it, and some have said the Tank needs to be small, petite, minute on the wrist because that's how it was back when it was first introduced. And I say "thanks for the input, I love the way it sits on my wrist, and also really wanted the in-house mechanical movement over the quartz, plus I get a date this way." and then go about my merry way ๐Ÿ‘ I also did a video on it, showcasing how it looks on my wrist with casual, smart business, etc. looks. Check it out if you've got the time and are curious: https://youtu.be/L79HAWJE3kY?si=od-DaDO7D5tWhcNg also here's a shot of it on my wrist just for fun ๐Ÿฅณ

Cool tip about the Pythagoras! I guess I have been โ€œspoiltโ€ by how a certain rectangular watch sits on my wrist *cough Apple Watch cough* looks like hence finding a tank xl size ok

Cool! It did cross my mind if my XL was too big, but I do have quite a massive frame and the L did seem to look grossly misproportionate ๐Ÿฅฒ

Yes for dimensions! But that is a rotary Cambridge
