watch MUST KNOWs

I'm pretty new to the watch world, and I wanna know what are some MUST KNOWs in the world of watches, as I try to collect and/or flip watches?

I can’t speak to flipping, but when buying for yourself, buy what you love and will wear. Don’t get too caught up in what other people have to say, everybody has an opinion and a lot of them won’t apply to you. And enjoy yourself.

You will lose money on most flips, especially if you count how much your time is worth. That is before eBay or processing fees. That leads to point one, buy and enjoy what you like. Wear the heck out of it and once you learn more, if you want to sell it to fund the next watch do so, but do not expect to make money. You may get lucky, but more times than not, you are simply hoping to get as much of your money back as possible.

Until you know what is what, why it is, and how it is, do not go over board. Start with one at a time until you know all you can about it and all you can about what you may potentially replace it with. If you have the budget, have at it.

Cultivate your own garden. Worrying about what others have that you do not or what they are doing is a sure fire way to fail, in watches and life.

Social media is not real. What you see on YouTube is not real. Most reviews are glorified ads. The flipping channels are not real, nor is their lifestyle. Take all of it with a giant grain of salt.

Never buy what you cannot afford to lose.

Never go into debt for a watch.

Probably not what you are looking for, but it works for most of us.

All of the above and try to avoid fashion brands who make handbags or perfume etc, stick with names that just make watches

Don't buy with the idea of selling, but wearing. It's the AD's job 😎

Don't buy what you have to because it's the best in its category, buy what you want to, there is enough Seiko SRPxx, Tudor BB58, Rolex DJ36/39/41 or PP Nautilus 5711 in the world, they don't need you.

Most important of all : Enjoy wearing your watches, for whatever reason, and post pictures here !

Cheers

As much as I kind of agree with that advice I would say learn the different instead ,so you know what fashion brands to avoid.

some fashion brands are great and better than watch brands.

There are many fashion brands that invested a lot in their designs and R&Ds and have established themselves among the Watch community. Brands like Cartier, Bulgari, Chopard or even Chanel for example. Cartier is #2 in Swiss Watch after Rolex and it is a fashion brand.

Fashion brands bring fresh new out-of-the-box designs to the watch world, to me they are miles better than homage brands.
