Submariner date vs. submariner

General consensus seems to be submariner is preferred over submariner date. Can anyone shed light on why that is? I realize it’s partly personal preference but what makes one better than the other practically speaking?

I think you will find the community split on preference. The no date is a cleaner looking dial and many do not like the cyclops. Others like me have too many watches and hate setting the date. For others, they prefer the date.

No wrong answer regardless, just comes down to preference as you said. Neither is better than the other.

I think the date window upsets the balance of the dial with the cyclops. If you compare it to how the date is done on the SMP for example, it’s much less disruptive

Thank you both

The cyclops is the herpes of the watch world.

Submariner all day long for me! It's the original and it's iconic! Super clean symmetry. It is personal preference though.

I prefer it without the date. I find the cyclops on Rolex watches to be an eyesore.

It's simply too big and is too great a blemish on otherwise nice designs.

I really appreciate having a date display on a watch, but when it comes to the Sub, I much prefer the look of the no-date version. If Rolex could place the date at the 6 o'clock position, and get rid of the cyclops, I would probably prefer that, but given currently available options, I opted for the no date 114060.

Opinions on this seem to be mixed, but based on how many postings I see of Subs, I would have thought that the date version was substantially more popular.

Simply the original ones didn't had a date in the 50s. So a "real" submariner shouldn't have one according to some purist. But I personally like a date on my watches, I don't care about the mighty symetry. I simply like that they offer the choice of both.
