Mido Multifort TV Big Date.. a genuine inspiration from the archives or too much of a Patek omage? 🤔

I’m really loving this recent Mido release. Especially the orange rubber band/gray dial combination. But one question keeps bothering me in my head. Is it too much of an homage to Aquanaut/Nautilus? Yes, I know the tv shaped cases are something Mido had in their history since early 70s, and they claim to have dived into their archives for the inspiration. But let’s be honest, it’s clear they’ve been heavily inspired by Patek for this one.

So, fellow crunchers, I’m wondering what’s your opinion on this? Is it original enough? Would you buy it? If there are any owners out there, I would love to hear your opinion on the quality of finishing and the general feel of the watch in person. 🙂 I’ve only seen it online.

P.S. that big date is 🔥

I personally really like it. It's on the list. Maybe in green??

Nice watch ... The Date is 🔥

·

I see it as a straight up homage. If pagani design did this, the reception would have been very different

Oh it's definitely a homage. But if Pagani did it, it wouldn't have a big date (the date would be at 3 o'clock) and it would have Arabic numerals. As someone who's never going to own a Patek but wouldn't want a straight up replica, this would definitely scratch an itch.

·

I love it. Trouble is nowhere in the uk to try it on.

·

Love the Big Date. It is currently on the short list to purchase.

The Mido TV is three years earlier than Patek Philippe Nautilus. The Mido Ocean Star Aquadura Square is even earlier. We see a backroll to the 70th and earlier all over the place. I suggest that it is neither stealing from each other nor homage but some common believes of design back than and reused today. But if we wanted to categorize into stealing and homage: What if the the Nautilus is and was sneaked from Mido by Patek Philippe?

I see more of an homage to the 70th. And from that perspective the Mido TV Big Date in orange and grey is absolutely hot 🔥! Imagine they did it in orange, green and brown. It would be a superlative in celebrating the 70th 😁.

·

I like this watch! The complication is really cool, and the aesthetic seems to be just right!

·

Yes it's Aquanaut-ish but less than the PRX is Oysterquartz-ish, it's cool and looks fun, who cares just like what you like

This is Mido in 1970:

It wasn't original then.

@AndreasEU has the right sense of it. If you only know a few watches from the past then you see homages of them. With more exposure to the past you see their inspirations.

·

I like this Mido and am also considering it but they are not available in Turkey. In my opinion big date is a very nice complication that is not widely used. ou can say it is inspired by the Patek but is not even a homage.

What I would call a homage is the watches that looks the same as the other watch when viewed from a distance.

I do not believe people would mistake this Mido with a Patek from across the room.

·

I don't have Patek vibes when looking at the Multifront. I feel like at this point there's only a certain number of designs and their variations that one can offer before you go the out-of-the-box route. I would certainly put a new Mido on my wishlist.

Spot on. Mido has genuine heritage all its own and played in this space (design-wise) for 24 years before PP dropped the Aquanaut. Can we please not compare Mido to Pagani or any other 'homage brand'. I have no issue with what Pagani do but this is a straight up category error...

·

Love it. Doubt I’ll ever see it in a shop. 😕

BTW, just checked out the WEB site and that is one funky date change that happens.

But Patek is famous and more expensive so people will say this one is homage anyway. Who cares what they say. Its a nice watch and doesnt cost as much as a Mercedes to own. Id rock it if Im into this style.

And Mido is an amazing brand. Their watches are oustanding for their prices. They are not some chinese knock off brands

I like it and I see it as it’s own thing.

The only similarities but NOT full 1:1 copy are two PP traits; the base of the case shape, and the dial has slight similarities!

The bezel is it’s own thing. The indicies and date are also it’s own design and makes it unique.

It’s safe to buy and not feel like it’s an homage, go for it if you like it!

I posted about a Piaget polo s looking like a PP Aquanaut and got many responses that it looked nothing like an Aquanaut.🤯 So I retreated from the debate. Nothing to talk about when people can’t see it’s an obvious copy(I’m just not gonna go there)

So my friend here is a lazy attempted of designing and revamping a piece in your old catalogue from Piaget.

Image

I’m sure u can see this looks nothing like the polo line for the 60’s-70’s and in fact that this is an 95% homage of an Aquanaut at $15900 cad ( this Polo s is nice but it’s not unique)

This Mido is cool and unique not an homage in my eyes.

Actually I used to really like the Piaget because it reminded me of Patek to some extent, but the TV is a much better looking watch in my opinion, so the plan is to get that and not the Polo. 🙂

I hate homages but to me this does not look like one. I think that this is it's own watch

I love square and squareish watches, and my old eyes love the big date (making me an apostate no doubt). So yeah, me likey.

I can absolutely rely to that old eyes big date thing 🙈🤓.

Thanks for knowleges

At least it's not a knockoff piece, it's one from the archives so it's a true original to itself I guess.

·

I don’t own one so no hands on experience to share with this but I wanted to give me opinions on this being a homage to the Nautilus. I can see why it’s close enough to go that direction but I don’t think it close enough to be honest. I feel there is enough difference to not be a homage.

Same in Azerbaijan mate! I go on business trips to Kazakhstan quite often, and they have a couple of ADs selling Mido there I think, so I’ll try find one there

I hope you find one. Good luck.

Nice #mido

·

I got one in an airport duty-free, green face metal band, couldn't be happier especially with the price. When I 1st saw it I was willing to pay more.

I have the green one with stainless band. I posted a Pic on my profile page.

Iike that one much better than the new model

It's not a homage because it came before the PP.

·
Kclouis

Is it a homage?

Perhaps. Sometimes I feel like there are only a around half dozen original genres of watch so all watches are homages to a certain extent.

Do I care? No. It’s not a straight up copy.

You can't copy a watch that came after.

·

My issue is the molded plastic/resin dial. That's not what I want for this price.
