Watches & knives

My addiction to watches didn't begin until my mid-twenties, but I have always loved knives. I can remember the first knife my father gave me on my 8th birthday. It was a custom slip joint with amazing stag scales and a clip-point blade that measured roughly 3 1/2 inches when closed. It was the perfect boy's knife.

I would stare at that knife for hours, admiring the exquisitely ground blade, the smoothness of its action, and the sound it made while closing. It was so crisp, and even its subtle flaws made mine unique.

Like watches, the knife hobby can be a very slippery slope. One day you're buying high-quality mass-produced knives that range between $100 and $400, only to find yourself years later attending custom knife shows bidding on knives that sell for $1,000 to $10,000+

Now, 40 years later, I'd like to think of myself as an aficionado. I have been fortunate to own some amazing pieces. Like watches, they are an extension of my inner self, my soul. I carefully pair my knife each day with the watch I wear.

If you have them, let's see them!

Unfortunately knives are very much frowned upon in stabby Britain. Damn shame, got a little Spyderco but can't carry it thanks to the youth ruining the hobby for us grown ups...😞

·

My knife owning - again in stabby UK - is limited to kitchen knives where I do spend £££, a couple of cheap Mora knives for camping and a couple of Swiss Army knives for general stuff.

Coincidence is that the grandparents who bought me my first ever watch when I was about 6 in '73/74 also bought me my first Swiss Army knife at about the same age! 😄

I'm still allowed to collect watches, knives, not so much 😛

I never realized how useful an edc knife was until I started carrying one and realized that I use it constantly. Went with a Benchmade 940 and lost it on a NJ beach While striper fishing. Bought another benchmade but man do I miss that 940

I used to forge blades years ago and made a couple railroad spike knives also. The metal in them is crap and short so had to weld on some decent steel to make it work. Longest was made from an industrial grader blade 2 feet long that had been worn down to a quarter inch. They are a crapload of work to do.

My 3 wear every working day on my work trousers and watch I’m wearing today ha

Also my little Swiss Army knife that I never leave home without haha

Germany is also a bit stingy (and stabby) but I’m rocking a Real Steel Luna Framelock (with removed thumb pin) and a Real Steel G10 with a slipjoint and non-locking blade.

As of now, I’m good here…

I think you’re in good company here haha. Just put my 15 year old Lego strider SMF in the drawer. Today I’ve got a lion steel karambit in magnacut my some gave me for Christmas last year. That’s a beautiful harlowe

California has some of the strictest knife laws in the country, if not the world. You're only allowed to carry blades under 2 inches in this state, which pretty much makes it pointless. Needless to say, I don't carry and keep my collection of custom butterflies at home. Here's a vintage pocket balisong from the late Ralph Turnbull with my vintage Elvia chronograph.

Very nice and thank you. I've owned many by Charles Marlow. 😉

🤨 the world ey? I’ll agree, being in CA there are definitely dumb laws, but when you think about Britain/Germany/Most of Europe and hear about their laws, it’s no contest. Even compared to other states like NY, MA, or D.o.C (i know it’s not tec a state, but whatever) CA laws aren’t the worst I’ve had to live with.

I got into knives first, which led to watches.

I didn’t get into the deep end of custom knives, just a silly amount of productions.

I got out of the knife orbit much sooner than the watch orbit. Although they border on art, the prices and scarcity of some knives was eventually a turn off for good. I was able to say, I only need one or two good knives with quality steel. Here's the only noteworthy knife I acquired; a Grayman Dua.

Can't go wrong with that👊🏽

Headed to the Westside to pick up the wife at SeaTac Airport. I hate driving over the pass this time of year, figured it would be best to swap to the no date.

I’ve sold a heap of my starter knives and really don’t have the money to get the folders I really desire without curbing watch buying plans . Cant let go of these two though ( folders not pictured)
