DIY watch club is really cool

I dont know what people generaly think of watchmaking and servicing but to me its really interesting. For those who dont know, DWC or DIY watch club is a company that makes diy packages with movements and all other watch parts you need to assemble the watch, and of course the tools to do it, its really cool you get a small box with a lot of tools that are really good quality and the instruction you get is good too. I’ve been looking at these watch packages for a long time and a few days ago my sister surprised me with one.

It’s a NH35 seiko movement and the watch case is really good quality, for the money I think the watch alone is great but considering you get the tools AND the experience I think this can be an amazing gift for people who love good watchmaking.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this

Yup ! Now go to Aliexpress and create your own!! 🥳 for less price!! Haha!! I personally was gifted RotateWatch build kits that triggered me on creating and building watches!! I recommend Aliexpress to experiment with designs and other movmements as well!! Happy Building !! 🍻🥳

As per Ichibunz, start with Ali & I'm pretty sure that Cousins ship globally and get going. Me, I don't have the patience for it but my mate is thoroughly hooked and within 6 months is buying broken watches from fleabay, repairing them and selling them, they're really good, it's so cool to see him transform something almost ready for the bin to something people love.

He fully fell down the rabbit hole and has a way to go before he is able to recoup the costs of the tools he's bought but that's a different matter, it keeps him quiet! 😄

I’d love to be like your mate hahaha. I know it’s not a profit job but it’s the experience for me!

I have been tempted for the experience and for the tools. I have been wanting to try my hand at basic watch modding level tinkering but haven't been able to do so because of the lack of tools(or what tools to get).

I don't really want the watch that comes with the package, but maybe it could service as an experiment subject I don't mind destroying as I get used to moving watch parts around.

He started with broken Seiko's at around €15 and if he couldn't fix them he stripped them for parts, that happened a few times and he built up a stock, he watched loads of YouTube and is completely self-taught. His confidence is getting greater every day, the only downside is that watches are now a key part of every conversation with him! 😄 😄 😛

In a nutshell....

Pick movement (Seiko, Miyota, etc).

Pick case that mates up with movement.

Pick dial that also fits movement & fits case.

Pick handset as above.

Tweezers, case holder, case back wrench (Amazon)

Small snips, small file, etc

Watch a ton of YT how to's.

What a thoughtful gift! It looks great! I basically turned my SRPD into a diy lol, I would LOVE to get one of the kits tho, it would be fun to. “Start from scratch” with a build, and would be nice to add to my tool collection as well.

To anyone thinking of trying, go for it!!! It’s very rewarding, and meditative in a way. How often do you focus on something physical anymore? I know most of us are attached to our phones and what not, it’s really a rewarding hobby. The sense of accomplishment to assemble something so delicate, that you can take anywhere… awesome. And when someone asks you about it, their reaction when you tell them you built it is great, and almost sure to get a convo going.

Oh yeahhhh I love making my own watches in styles that suits me. It’s a fun hobby!

Can they do custom dials?

Can they do custom dials?

Only customs I have seen so far is, if you want a logo but you can get a sterile dial and design a custom print of a dial, ie indices or numerals on a 3d print and paste it on the dial… and viola!! Your own dial!! Or or or!! Like me who’s trying to convince my wife that we need a glowforge!! Then you can laser engrave your dials !! Right!! 🍻🥳… I know sorry I’m not much of help lol…

On Aliexpress build your watch around your movement, popular automatic movement’s are the NH range the 35-39 all have the same physical dimensions but differ slightly ie one has date, one has open heart etc, so decide on your movement and just search for hands, case, etc for that movement it’s pretty straight forward.

Welcome to the building bug 👍🏻

Oh, how I have lusted in my heart for a Glowforge. Aren't there certain metals you can't laser engrave or ones that must have a certain coating?

I received a DIY Watch Club kit as a gift last year. Had a blast putting it together and ended up with a decent watch too!

I have the same DIY diver (with some 3rd party hands purchased separate from them) and learned a lot from the assembling experience. The tools they shipped are OK in hindsight (2 of them broke in later sessions but that could be due to my impatience as a pretend watch operator).

The new Tourbillon model seems interesting to assemble.
