New Presage GMT models with 4R34 movement

Seiko has announced three new Presage GMT models. For those who want a dressier model than Seiko 5 GMT, these should be a very good option

The SSK009 (SARY229 JDM) has a blue dial, the SSK011 (SARY231 JDM) has a silver dial, and the SSK013 (SSK013JC JDM) has a brown dial. All models are based on their 60s series design.

True, the blue and white are going to be popular colors. The dial on the 60s models have concentric finishing with different shades of the same color.

Why hardlex? Outside of that it’s another cool option from Seiko.

Its a box crystal, so hardlex is a more sensible option and it is more durable. Less prone to damage and chipping especially when the crystal is sticking out of the case. Plus box sapphire crystals are expensive to produce and will bump up the price a lot.

Interesting in the durable side. I’ve only broken two crystals in my life both of which were Seiko hardlex. Understandable on the price.

Durable in the sense, they won't shatter easily compared to a sapphire crystal since the crystal is exposed. Also, hardlex clarity is nicer in the boxed shape and cheaper to repair if something happens.

The King Seiko box sapphire crystal replacement cost is around $250 including labour so there are pros and cons. The boxed shaped aesthetic is purely for vintage vibes.

I honestly don't get the pressage line...to me the looks is off in most of the models, and I don't see a great value offer.

In the budget GMT market, I would go with any of the brands using the new Miyota 9075 "travel GMT".

These will be a great sale rack pickup!

Noy bad, for office GMT's.

Since when do sapphire crystals shatter "easily"?

Since when do sapphire crystals shatter "easily"?

Sapphire crystals are more scratch resistant compared to mineral crystals but being higher in the hardness scale they are more brittle and prone to shattering if you catch the crystal over a edge.

You are not going to damage flat sapphire crystals easily but box shaped sapphires are very prone to chipping and shattering if you knock the watch.

Which brands are using Miyota movement?

I like how they look, I don't like how they're priced. Frankly, AliExpress brands like Seestern or San Martin seem to, at this point, offer far better value for money, with the very same NH34 (because that's what the 4R34 is) movement inside. For less, you get sapphire, a better WR, and a better bracelet. I also can't understand Seiko's obsession with using display backs. Could they please hide that drab movement under a closed case back?

No doubt those brands offer great value but I would be more interested in those brands if they did some original design with which they can show off the value they are offering. They are anyway outsourcing majority of the parts to cut costs and offer value, they may as well as invest in some designs rather than just doing homages of even affordable models from well know manufactures. I'm not against homages but its just my view of these brands.

I personally would buy something original from a brand.

Wish they would do a black dial with silver rather than gold, just like the model without the gmt function! The blue one looks to be the pick of the litter though.

·

To my eyes, SSK009 has the colour of the Ginza limited edition, without the cobblestone effect.

·

another non-rotating bezel?

Yeah, the 60s Presage never had a non-rotating bezel. Atleast the 24 hour bezel in this model is of more use than the normal variant.

They did do a Ginza variant in the Presage 60s style with open heart. Seems like the same shades of blue, light and dark shades on the concentric finishes on the dial.

Correct, I used to own one - see below. My eyes were drawn straight to the colours.

Not so fast; the opposite is true: See https://aarniwood.com/mineral-glass-or-sapphire-crystal/#

GMT's are getting so popular! but why not - every watch should be a GMT right?

Well to most, they are not going to be looking for a second time zone 90% of the time unless you are working across time zones and travelling.

In this day and age especially with smartwatches, to some, you have to explain what is the use of the fourth hand in your watch and I am speaking from experience 😂

·

At that price you are better off saving up for a Seiko Sharp Edge GMT (beautiful, case & dial plus a good bracelet), or spending less for an NH34-based micro or way less for a Chinese watch (my sun-$300 Cronos keeps COSC-level accuracy and took a beating with style when I was delivering Chinese food during my recent spell of unemployment). Mostly, I just do not like the look of these. Phoibos makes a better-looking Quartz GMT for half the price.

I have a sharp edge GMT and that cost around $1000 or more after discounts and these new Presage 60s models are half the price.

If you see the 60s series Presage in person, you will know how well these are made. Apart from the boxed hardlex, it has all other specs like the premium line Presage series for $500. And the 4R34 can be regulated tightly if needed. So this is still a good value if you are looking for something from Seiko.
