block watches. Thoughts?

Having listed to in my option the best watch podcast at this time “about effing time” they spoke in depth about blok watches for kids. My boy aged 6 loves watches and is constantly in my watch box. (whilst I get annoyed when he leaves them over the house, I also have a smile on my face)

Questions:-

  1. has anyone purchased one? Any feedback?
  2. what are general thoughts?

I want to get one for my twins when they are a little older.  They both notice my watch but I dont think they are ready for their own "tick tick" yet.

I imagine, like many posts following the About Fing Time podcast, we’ll hear more.

To me, anything that gets kids into watches is cool. It’s a neat design and they come in a ton of colors.

That said, they are competing against heavy hitters at that price point, including discounted prev gen Apple Watches, which if my nieces and nephews are to believed, is what kids want. I always gifted Gshocks and yes, Apple watches, but this is a cool alternative.

For me the design with being able to use the function for 5 more minutes before bed etc is just genius

Better than Parchie. I see what they are trying with the hands and dial, to be time-telling instructive without looking too remedial and juvenile, but as an adult the hands bug me. If one is to appear thicker, it should be the hour hand!

I think they look perfect for what they are tools to teach kids how to tell time. My 5 year old is really getting interested in watches and I think I might get him one of these for Christmas. I especially like the idea with the bezel.

·

I really like these and the overall design for kids to understand time is brilliant. Would like to get these for my kids when older, if they care about watches.

·

Last Christmas I got Timexes for my kids (9,6) that reflected their personalities/interests, but they don’t really wear them even though they see me wearing mine

The watches were worn briefly, but now sit on their shelves. I think they’re too young. It was good to introduce them to watches but I’ll wait until they’re ready to choose one for themselves before trying again.

I do love the tool watch-ness of this Block model though.

not many small mech watches out there on the market I can see where it's place is in the market. good ramp to get them into mechanical watches.

Not my favorite podcast, but I do listen 😊 I was checking this one out. I like the concept, considereding one for my eldest son (8). He is already wearing a casio sporadically .

The hands are the same width. On the black model, the hour hand blends into the dial creating a negative space effect. The hour hand is white centered, black bordered while the minute hand is inverse. Same with the other models in the line. Just tough to see that with the configuration posted by the OP.

The pink version has a similar, but less camoflaging approach.

So am I correct in assuming the name refers to the way they have hour"blocks" such that the hand will pretty much point to said block throughout the hour, simplifying the first step of telling analog time? That's clever and superior to most teaching watches. Of course it looks a bit odd and off center to an adult but they are serving the end user.

Flik flak watches are better suited for kids but they would destroy even a G-shock the way they play

I ordered one for my daughter the day they came out.

I was absolutely in love with the idea of the dial layout (the hour 'blocks' are not the the edge of each hour, like every watch in the world, they are centered!) and bezel functionality (5, 10, 15, 30 mintue 'blocks') for kids.  So, " we are starting homework in 10 minutes, set your bezel" and the like is common now at our house.

Perhaps owing to getting one first off the production line - the our bezel was weirdly tight after several days with it.  Also, our blue model didn't have great legibility in all light conditions.

With a few concerns I contacted the head of the company by email - he promptly returned my email and he sent off a new yellow model to us immediately.  Stellar and responsive customer service.

The yellow colorway (my daughters preference, it's best to let them decide!!) is great, easy to read and bezel is nice clicky and good quality.
I expect this watch to last years, if not decades.  100x better build than normal kids watch.  The strap is even lined with a soft Japanese leather to make it more comfy and gentle on kids skin!!!  I asked about why no lume on the watches and he admitted he couldn't source non shady chinese lume at this price point, and I was happy with that answer!

My impression is that quite a bit of care and thoughtfulness, in addition to a brilliant idea about to help kids interpret time correctly.
