Applied indices

I can't help but the longer I devote myself to watches in general, whether it's the movement, the size, the quality E.g. of course there will always be a design as well. I thought for a long time about what I like so much about those small and somehow unique treasures until I came to the conclusion that the first thing I notice on a watch are the indices. I'm not really an exclusive fan of just the numbered indices on the dial but I like it the most. I know that in the past it was rather an art to carve small numbers out of metal and glue them to the exact place and today it is probably done by some sophisticated laser cutter but when I look at those numbers, I sometimes wonder how skilled the watchmaker must have been. The reason I'm writing all this is because after looking through a lot of pics, either on wruw or generally on horology websites, it seems to me that there is a lack of watches with numbers. I mean applied numbers rather than printed. They are mostly dots, sometimes squares or small tiny sticks but it evokes mass production in me where the manufacturer tries to cut corners. Of course it's understandable but I feel a little deprived of those perfect details. Perhaps I'm just wrong and I'm an incompetent surfer on the Internet, but can you point me to some watches with arabic numbers, let's say, within the 750 $€ budget? I mean all the numbers from 1 to 12, not only 3,6,9,12 The only watch I found is the Alpinist...

...but even there every other number is missing and also Hamilton Khaki but I'mnot sure whether the indices are applied or printed and then there is my watch but that is a homage built 🤷‍♂🙂

Check out the Hamilton Jazzmaster Maestro models on Chrono24, right now there are 12 listed that meet this criteria, some new/unworn.

Here’s one from my collection with 12 applied indices (11 actually), the Seiko SRPG29.

I never realized that MR01 have applied indices. On the pictures I saw they looked rather printed as applied, thanks 🙂🍻

You nailed exactly what I meant with the indexes. I'm not entirely sure about the ST movements but the dial on the secondly mentioned Berny is very good looking, I like it. Maybe I should check it out if it is possible to change the ST movement for something else. Thanks 🍻👌

Check out Kuoe. You might find a few that you like, and definitely within your 750 $€ budget.

Thanks, Someone wrote a post about this exact watch yesterday, I don't remember who, but I immediately went to look at their website because they look extremely good, I obviously don't know about many brands because there is always something that surprises me 🍻😁

I've been planning on getting the Old Smith 90-002 since 2022. Will try to finally get it this 2024. It's also because of their great arabic numeral indices that I'm getting it, besides its vintage vibe. I'm sure you'll also find something you like.

I like that brand, I've been looking at this watch since yesterday, the Royal Smith 90-008 looks very nice to my taste but unfortunately they small, I would prefer this watch at 39 - 40 mm

Well it is a dress watch, and the photo showing it on the model wrist looks quite good and nicely proportioned. But, it's your call.

Even though I have a small wrist, I prefer larger watches, partly because my eyesight is not as good as when I was young, but especially the details can be more prominent on the watch, which is a big benefit for me. I really like the ones in the picture, I just don't know how reliable the Miyota movement in them is, but anyway, these watches are among my top options for the next purchase 👌🍻

Totally understand, my friend. Eyesight is really topmost importance. Miyota is made by Citizen, and is a robust and reliable movement on par with the Seiko produced NH35/NH36. In fact, some have even mentioned that it may be slightly better. Wishing you all the best to find the most fitting watch for you. Advanced congrats!

I like the applied indices, silver on a white face. They give the dial some dimension, not just a flat surface.
