Mido?

Hey friends, happened upon a new Mido GMT world timer at a deep discount, as it’s no longer a current model.

I’ve been interested in a GMT for a long time and think adding a worldtime function makes the watch more usable. Plus, I love the look of it.

However, I don’t know much about the brand. Any Mido fans out there or Crunchers with opinions on the brand and quality?

As far as I am aware, Mido has a good reputation in the watch world. Others will be more knowledgeable than I am though

Hear nothing but good things about them, was even considering this Ocean Star Tribute for a while

There are some products where I don't understand how 'last year's model' should be discounted. Your average Joe isn't going to know which watches are older versions.

Anyway, I've never heard anything bad about Mido, I think they just fly under the radar. If it speaks to you and it's reasonable then ...

Mido is part of the Swatch group. It's a great brand with watches in the $1k-$3k range.

I have a number of Midos in the collection...

Thank you! What’s your experience been with the Multifort? The one I’m looking at is a Multifort 80th Anniversary GMT Worldtimer.

My Multifort Aquadura Pulsometer is an older reference from 1998 based on an original reference from 1934.

It has worked flawlessly since I acquired it. I purcchased it on the secondary market and have had no issues.

The modern Mido references use the same ETA movements as the rest of the Swatch Group so it will be the same GMT movement that is used in Tissot, Certina, Hamilton, Longines, and Rado.

That’s a hot watch. Never seen it before.

·

Like everyone else I’ve only heard good things about them. Recently picked up the Mido Multifort Chronograph second hand

Image

And it’s running great. Like a few other Swatch Group brands, like Certina, Mido simply fly under the radar.

Mido is an amazing brand, I own one and I am honestly wanting another. I got mine from jomashop, it was a mistake to buy from them, got it repaired locally and it's running +1.0 seconds a day. The ETA powermatic 80 is a movement any qualified watchmaker can fix and get parts for a reasonable repair price. I would recommend you buying a Mido, I truly dig mine

You can’t go wrong with Mido. It’s a solid watch. My grandfather passed me down his old one from the 70s not that long ago, and while it needs a decent service, I can still get it to tick.

FWIW, the GMT complication is one of my favorites as well.

Midi has nice quality and heritage. On the pic the indices look more Roségold then the case. That would turn me off. Otherwise. Awesome piece.

The one I’m looking at is rose gold with a brown leather strap… coordinates beautifully.

I was eyeing that same piece pretty hard the other day, Ashford has it for a real good price I think. I can't spend the money on it though, as I'm currently saving for an Explorer or BB58.

I contacted them today and found out some additional information about it. It is a rose gold color but they didn’t have the lug to lug. Found a Reddit post about it that says lug to lug is 43mm (which seems small for a 42mm case, so I think it’s wrong). I also found out the watch was an 80th anniversary edition release for the Multifort and was issued 2014 / 2015. I don’t feel warm and fuzzy about something that’s been sitting in a box for 8-9 years.

I like the Mido Multi-Fart GMT. I find that I have a lot in common with it.

I think it's a beautiful watch. If you add the cost of your neighborhood watchmaker's tune up to the steep discount you're getting, you will still come out ahead with a watch that might as well have been brand new this year.

On servicing— it looks like the 80th anniversary has an ETA caliber 2893-2, not a Powermatic 80 as mentioned above. I see that as a massive win; the Powermatic 80 is intended to be replaced instead of serviced, and the ETA 2893-2 gives you have a movement intended to be maintained and kept for the long haul.

@pete.mcconvill.watches has a great review because he addresses your concerns about the lug length, and also gets into some of the actual experience of owning/wearing/using the watch. I think you'll agree that his commentary is probably the most in-depth you'll be able to find on this watch (note, he's not reviewing the Anniversary version, but aside from the dial design the rest of his review will apply to your questions).

Thanks again for all of the information, it really helped! I pulled the trigger after verifying the return policy just in case the fit doesn’t work for my 6.5” wrist. Pretty happy with $830 off retail. I hope it lives up to my expectations!

Very, very nice! I wish my wife would enjoy watches as much as I do!

I have the world time and I love it. Mido is part of the swatch group and has a pretty solid history. I would go for it. I travel for business quite a bit and I love the T2 function where the internal bezel rotates so you know what the second time zone always is (not that I forget just nice to have)!

Thanks for the response and good to hear! This one should be here this week. I’m looking forward to it. I also travel often and my son lives in a different time zone so the gmt + worldtime appealed to me. Plus it looks awesome (at least in pictures)!
