How often do you complement others?

I read from time to time questions from fellow Crunchers „How often does anyone notice what watch you are wearing?”.

But how often do you, my friends complement other people’s watches? I know that it may be a bit cringy to talk to strangers, but I feel that with showing some „love” to random people we can make a change.

I do it sometimes and always, I mean always it makes people smile and kinda proud for being noticed.

1. Farmacy fellow wearing limited Swatch. Gave him props, made him smile.

2. Electronics shop seller was wearing metal G-shock. Told him that it is a cool watch. Made his day.

3. During doctors apointment I spotted Zeppelin. Doctor noded and thanked for noticing his watch.

4. Owner of leather good accessories shop was wearing Yahtmaster. Also reacted with smile for my acknowledgment of his piece.

I am going to continue appreciate stangers’ watches and letting them their choices do go unnoticed. You never know small kindness and appreciation can make one’s day. Will you join me in making random people smile?

Great question! Not all that often to be honest. As long as I’ve been paying attention, I’ve complimented somone’s Breitling SuperOcean, a Tissot Visodate, and a guy with a Nomos club (can’t remember if it was a campus) once, but I remember thinking that watch gives off a definite enthusiast vibe.

It looks like a good start!

All the time! I love it when people comment or compliment my watch so I try and put that same energy out

Thats great! Keep on going!

My last compliment was to a guy wearing a Rolex at a bar in a restaurant. I thought he was going to call the police.

·

Pretty often actually. I'm also a big fan of the side look and nod. Don't have to say words to communicate a watch recognition

·

Not for strangers but I do if a friend or associate is wearing one. In my country few my age wear watches, and most of those that do wear either gshocks or smartwatches.

·

The other day at the coop (grocery store) there was a guy wearing a Patek nautilus. I noticed but kept doing my shopping. Then I was at the hot bar filling my box, and some other guy stopped him to talk about. So I walked over and showed them my Chris ward GMT and he had ourselves a regular meetup. It was a good vibe.

Last year I got to meet one of those online pandemic friends for the first time in real life, and to my surprise we were both wearing Hamilton khaki fields. That was fun.

Also, one time I was doing a zoom interview and the guy was wearing a g shock and I said oh wait hold on and put mine on too. And now it’s our fun thing to joke about.

·

To be honest I haven’t complimented to many peoples watches in person. I definitely want to do so more when I see a watch that compliments the person so well. I’m sure if it ends up being an enthusiast it I’ll make there day. I’ll also drop WatchCrunch in the conversation somewhere in there. Thanks for raising the awareness ✌️😉

Sounds nice

·

Thats odd. Not the fact that you complement others, but their lack of knowledge

Yeah, I live in Poland and it is qiute hard to find a real watch on someones wrist. Makes it more fun when you do spot it to give a shoutout

So watches can connect people. It is nice to have such memories

I will notice other people’s watches, but my social anxiety prevents me from ever striking up a conversation with them about it. Just isn’t my thing.

I’ve complemented many people on their watches over the years. I would say most of the time it starts an interesting watch conversation.

It does. I’m glad you do spread good vibes

Ok first off that shot has reached my eyes, brain, heart, soul….GODDAMMMNN!!!

Complementing others - all the time. If I see someone rocking a nice watch, I always give them a “btw I love your watch”.

Last one was my wife’s specialist/doctor who had on a first gen Planet Ocean - straight away “btw doctor, your watch is so damn cool”.

First of all thank you for complementing my photo. Second of all it is nice that you share a good vibe giving others props

I compliment people and they look at me weird or don’t engage most of the time. So I’m going to start doing it less….its rare anyone wants to talk shop.

That is wierd

Yeah, I don't compliment people simply because most of my interactions with others are with people of a higher economic class than myself, and those people treat compliments from a poor as a threat.

same case here - I don’t do that any more, almost everytime they bought the watch just like (expensive)accesories or received it as a gift. Almost nobody cares for watches - except collectors

·

Sounds reasonable

·

This is probably my biggest take away too.

I do find some groups are super knowledgeable though, military folks seem to be - esp. aviators who are really into Breitling, Omega, and Longines due to their connection to aerospace history.

·

I do compliment if the situation allows, I.e. never to a lone female, or a single guy in a rough area. As long as, I think, they would be comfortable with me saying something.

A sign of the times we live in!

·

All the time. I'm a vape shop manager so see a lot of wrists. Even struck up watch-based friendships with a few regular customers.

Seen a few Rolex, Breitling etc, but one that impressed me most was a couple year old Eterna dress watch, really not my style usually, but it is an exquisite piece.

Love the SMP 😍👍

·

Overall i like talking to people. My girlfriend always comments on the fact that i talk to strangers everywhere. I love talking about watches and will compliment others when i see a watch on someones wrist that stands out. I haven't met a jerk yet.

I say go for it. I know it would put a smile on my face to get the compliment, so i give em out to maybe make someone's day

·

Out in the world I’ll compliment folks on occasion. I think the easiest to spot are the MoonSwatches and I’ll gladly say hi to someone with one on. I have a buddy who confirms this too telling me no one ever really mentions his white gold daytona but his Moonswatch gets tons of attention.

I work in a fancy restaurant and do not engage guests on their watches but have seen some stunners, and some truly ugly yet very expensive watches (diamond covered Richard Mille last week, like WTF?!).

·

Definitely can make someone uncomfortable, had a questionable young man come up to me once after noticing my sub. The whole situation seemed off, so when he asked to get a better look at it, I casually turned and said, sure, but if you think that's nice, you should see my knife. 😂

·

All the time, generally they appreciate it and sometimes you find another watch nerd to shoot the shit with for a few minutes

·

I try to, but I gauge the situation first. If it’s anything worth nicking I’ll usually say nothing in case they get twitchy but if I’m somewhere quiet like a waiting room, definitely I’ll mention it

I wish your Mondaine friend would have spoken to an actual Watch Enthusiast first. One of us could have performed a real life Wristwatch Public Service (WPS). Since he finds watches difficult to read, he probably can't read the tiny logo anyway. We could have recommended the Berny 2678M. For $18, the dial is very similar to the Mondaine and I would argue that it's a better watch in almost every way. I've had both.

Armed with this example, I started a company with a few other dedicated members. We roam the streets day and night looking to perform WPS (Wristwatch Public Services), or at least just compliment the wristwatches of others. But even though our intentions were good, as so often happens, we just didn't get many opportunities to perform good wristwatch deeds. The company was failing. What could we do? We called a high-level meeting. We brought in big shot advisors, experts, analysts. They had no clue. Then we had to break for lunch. The pizza delivery guy had overheard a few sentences and off-handedly suggested that we branch out. If we couldn't compliment strangers' watches, we could look to compliment them for other things. You know, diversify.

So we started to do that. Business is booming.
