A Tudor for a Highschool Graduate?

Was recently catching up with a friend of mine, and we got into the discussion of watches. He has a son who is about to graduate highschool and He's considering a BB38/36. His thought was that, he was given a quartz Tag Heuer when he was in highschool, which he then in turn gave to this particular son of his when his son entered high school. So, he's thinking, he would like to get his son a watch that he can give to HIS son (grandson from the father's POV). What are your thoughts? What kind of watch would you give to your kid in highschool? curious to hear what you guys think!

100% agree, i dont have kids too, but i really do think a blackbay is far too nice for anyone entering college, and there are far more important things before their first swiss watch.

If ever I would get them a watch, I would consider a Seiko 5 or offerings from Casio. Ultimately boils down to if they are even interested in watches.

A nice Seiko Presage will do it but that’s just my opinion.

It's all relative.

My kid won't be getting a BB, but for a family with money, a BB might be the right option.

Get the Seiko Black Bay aka the SRPE

I actually just give my son his first real watch for his graduation. Mido automatic watch as introduction for the use of analog hand time. So he can learn to appreciate a real watch piece. Now he really like it and bragged to his friends how to read analog time piece…….lol 🤣

Since I got nothing for graduation of high school and nothing university, which I fully paid my own way for.. I’m tempted to get my daughter nada..

I bought my first watch in high school with money I earned as a busboy and doing a paper route

… BUT being a lover of watches generally, if she was totally into some watch that was 500 or less (that I figured was excellent quality) then I’d get it for her.

Bought her this Blok for a Bday a little while ago, to appreciate time better

my income level is such that a Tudor purchase would be MY luxury watch, not a high school gift!!

I agree, it's the same with me, I guess that's what threw me off, because a Tudor is also MY luxury purchase. Beautiful watch that you purchased for your daughter though.

Well yeah I agree, I'm also thinking that if I were in a family with that level of wealth, I still wouldn't be a big fan of the idea that some highschool kid is banging around a Tudor and not taking proper care of it. 🤣

I think what you should do is give them a watch from your collection, that way it will already have a connection to them and you will know which one they like. I will be gifting my CW to my son when he is older.

·

Definitely a 36mm Rolex. Anyone will do. He can thank me later 😁

High school kids generally don't take proper care of anything. A watch would be no different.

A G-Shock GW-M5610 or maybe nothing at all in regards to a watch. A Gaming laptop for school work and gaming. Time have changed - the watch thing is not a thing today unless its an Apple watch.

Save the gifts of automatic watches for later in life. I have gifted some to my son (married with kids) and the expensive ones that I know he would like; I bought them for myself and I make sure that I wear them so that he can have those when I leave.

That's my 2 cents.

PS. There might be also an issue with a BB been scratched by accident by the kid and the view of the father on that scratch on the kid's watch.

Every kid is different, but I wouldn't be surprised if an 18 year old did not truly appreciate the significance of a luxury watch. If you're asking me, I would gift my son the knowledge to independence before giving him anything material. And I'm not saying the kid mentioned above doesn't have that already, I'm just saying that's what I would give.
