If Rolex made a no-date Submariner with a QUARTZ movement for around half the price, would you buy it?

Very interested in people’s takes on this. On one hand, many watch enthusiasts prefer mechanical watches because of the engineering that goes into them and the romance associated with an older yet still reliable technology. (Of course, quartz movements are still monumental feats of engineering in and of themselves—not taking anything away from that.)

On the other hand, though, we also care about brand reputation, history, and horological significance. If prestigious and well-established brands—not just Rolex as used in this example—started making their flagship models with quartz movements for much less money, would we buy them?

I don't mind a Quartz movement. If luxury brands offered a Quartz version of their flagship models for half the price, I would consider them. Aesthetic is more important for me.

·

Half price, even quarter price, is still beyond my means so nope. I’d be interested in how they would market it as a “premium quartz”.

·

I don’t mind a quartz and consider spring drive the ultimate advancement (engineering team with nearly infinite resources worked 20 years to create it) …

But clicked no since I don’t think much of Rolex 😉

·

I’d definitely be into that. The oysterquartz datejust is a grail for me - so a quartz sub would be just as desirable.

·

I selected no mainly because I’m not a fan of the current sub.

·

The main reasons I like mechanical is because of the display casebacks and smooth sweeps. I can maybe go with a closed caseback if the face is good enough. Maybe.

But if it doesn’t have a smooth sweep, that’s most likely a no. Some mechaquartz and I think bulova has a high beat quartz? Those I’d love to try. But even grand seiko quartz is the regular 1hz tick so it really bums me out.

And then considering how “standard” most of Rolex dials/hands/bezels have become (unfortunately), the only thing going for it now is the brand.

So most likely a no for me.

If it had some more interesting colors for some fun models, at a quartz price, and actually be AVAILABLE, then maybe.

How soon people forget that Rolex made ultra accurate quartz movements long before Grand Seiko… I’d totally buy a modern Oyster Quartz

·

the situation with the waiting list and all that is a deal breaker for me, so I wouldn't buy it.

but if any of you want to gift me one, I would wear it until an inch of it's life

I dislike the actual Submariner, along with most of the Rolex lineup, so it's a hard no for me.

·

Interesting question, and honestly I'm not sure how how I would react to it. Would definitely be interesting. With the craze started by the PRX, I was halfway expecting Rolex to try and play the trump card and reissue the Oysterquartz .

Nah, I'm poor

I voted No because 50 % of a Sub price still floats above Tudor level, and I already own a BlackBay 58. Plus I have a 1990's quartz YEMA SUPERMAN WORLDTIME, with a great aluminium pepsi bezel insert, on its way back from the spa.

But the idea is extremely interesting. I wore a quartz GMT Grand Seiko SBGN003 for a week long business trip in Asia and Middle East (sole watch I took) and I enjoyed every moment with it.

·

I'd like it, but it better be a big, well-designed movement in there and not a tiny one with a giant plastic movement guard.

·

Quartz? Nope, I don't mind quartz movements. However, switching to quartz or having a quartz alternative to the iconic automatic watches, takes away some of the sparkle of the watch itself. Rolex in the past offered an Oyster Quartz. Didn't really take off. Look currently a new Submariner is in the $10k range. If a quartz version came out for $5k, people would look and say why is this version so much money when good quartz movements are only in the hundreds of dollars if not cheaper. For that money, just go get a Tudor, that's what they were established to do by the maker of Rolex, be a more affordable version with the same quality.

I clicked "Yes" because as long as there were no waiting list games, a real Rolex quartz Submariner would be perfect.

For now I have this:

Then why would you need an expensive imi- . . . never mind.
