Rolex - Do they have gold?

I am still wondering if Rolex watches (OP and Milgauss, in particular) have gold. Yes, they are using 904L Stainless Steel as their main material for the case. However, some of the reviewers on YouTube did mention that these types have white gold in their dials (most probably in their applied markers), and (if I am not mistaken) for their crowns as well.

Rolex is still beyond my reach, but when I achieve it, those models will be under my radar. And for some personal reasons, wearing something with gold is kinda "no-no" to me, albeit for a white gold with such insignificant amount.

Thank you for enlightening a newbie! Happy weekend for y'all!

As far as I’ve read over on The Rolex Forum hands and hour markers on modern Rolexes are gold. Rolex themselves don’t seem to specify on their “anatomy” page. Don’t know about the crowns.

The gold is used to stop the hands and indices tarnishing over time, which can happen to steel.

I’m curious why the gold is a “no-no”?

I don’t want to assume anything about Hilman’s reasons, but I have heard of it in relation to Muslim men, I believe wearing gold is Haram or forbidden. Apparently, for women it’s okay. Other precious metals are generally okay I think. I don’t have a gold watch myself but it’s more financial than spiritual reasons!

Yes, it's just for personal reasons that made me consider choosing materials such as gold, platinum, or other precious metals. However, when I able to attain, Rolex can be under my radar.

Thank you.

I’ve learned something and I’m a wiser man for it.

As a Muslim I can confirm men aren’t permitted to wear gold. I know I’m wearing a Rolex. I’m a hypocrite and should really do better!

Im pretty Sure there is atleast some Gold in the movement

I know my new Explorer has white gold hands and hour markers. Same for the new oyster perpetual and date justs. And probably the case for all of their newly produced stainless steel models.

·

Same with me! Wish us good luck on the journey. 😀

Interesting, I learned something new today 👍🏻

Just a curious follow-up: does it only count if it's for appearances, as opposed to functional? For example, there might be gold in the circuit boards of a smart watch.

Maybe OP is a Muslim male.

I appreciate that this sounds absurd when we see all the Arab men decorating themselves with gold bling-bling - it’s actually forbidden for men to wear gold in Islamic doctrine.

FWIW, the white gold used in the current generation Rolex models is difficult to differentiate between 904L steel for the most part. Unless you're really, really discerning, in which case you'll probably have to not wear any of the modern Rolexes.

Sometimes it's better not to ask?

Good question. I’m no expert but I think if you know there’s gold in it then best to avoid.

Markers and hand set are always white gold

I never knew this

They do have gold, but unfortunately almost all watches will have a minute amount of gold in them as part of texts on the movement (like stating how many jewels and how many positions it is adjusted in). Further, if the platinum family is an issue as well then it's even worse because, aside from few watches, most movements are rhodium plated which is also a precious metal and in fact far more expensive than gold.

·

Yes, all Rolex models use gold as the material for hands an markers, also one of the reasons they get replaced after every service, as the bend too easily and are done, the moment a watchmaker looks in their general direction

Yes, this is why platinum is extremely popular with Middle Eastern luxury watch collectors.

No gold in movement.

Hands and indices are made of white gold on the stainless steel models. This is to avoid oxidation or tarnishing over time. Marketing wise it's also a smart move. Totally unnecessary to do this. Current surface treatments would do the same.

The crown is not made of white gold. It's the same 904L steel.
