Seiko 5 Sports is 55! Join the birthday celebration!

Image

Yup, Seiko 5 Sports is 55! I learned about this a few months back and was pleasantly amazed that this venerable line is over half a century already. Yet, in its short history, it's been nothing short of revolutionary. Why? The answer is simple: I wouldn't be surprised if worldwide, there are more people who own a Seiko 5 watch, than any other brand or line, in the entire horological spectrum and history. Seiko 5 gave more people the opportunity to own a quality watch at an affordable price. This definitely changed the whole ball game.

To commemorate their 55 years, Seiko designated a special site to showcase how they intend to celebrate this momentous occasion. https://www.seikowatches.com/global-en/products/5sports/special/55th/index

For those of us here on WC, who are Seiko 5 owners/collectors, I propose that we join in this celebration. Why not we designate May 5th (5/5) as a de facto Seiko 5 55th birthday on WC? Let's jointly celebrate our cool, stunning, timeless, amazing, beautiful Seiko 5 timepieces!

If you're in, kindly chime in on the comments section below. Share your wild ideas as well, on how we can celebrate the 55th birthday of Seiko 5. Here are just some ways I thought we can do...

1) Post on WRUW on May 5th, Friday. Or, post on WRUW this whole coming week of May 1-5.

2) Write a short post about your favorite Seiko 5 timepiece.

3) Do a quick Review of one of your Seiko 5 watches.

4) Do a Poll of some kind.

5) Do a mini-tournament of your favorite Seiko 5 watches (ala Microbrand tournament).

6) Host a Seiko 5 meetup in your area. Have a local beer drinking contest, where the winner gets a brand new Seiko 5 watch from funds pitched in by all WCers in your area. Hehehe...

7) Heck! You can even choose to celebrate this whole month of May if you want. Whatever else you can think of, go for it! 🍻

However you choose to celebrate, just remember to tag them with #seiko5at55 😎

Our Seiko 5 watches truly deserve the honor and recognition. What makes me love my Seiko 5 timepieces is the simple beauty of their distinctly Japanese design. I am equally amazed at the sunburst dials, the reliable Lumibrite glow, and how comfortable they are to wear on my wrist. My SNKL41 and SNXS79 are quite versatile and adaptable for all sorts of social occasions and business settings. I love my SRPB93 dive watch as it's not only robust for my simple outdoor water activities, but it also was selected as the model to represent our high school class, besting many proposed contenders.

Finally, there is that X-Factor. My Seiko 5 watches captivate me. They've struck a chord within. And for me, that's enough.

How about you? Why do you love your Seiko 5 watch? Will you join in the celebration this week, or on May 5th? How do you plan to celebrate Seiko 5's 55th birthday?

Happy 55th Birthday Seiko 5! 🥳🍻

Edit: My good friend @Whitesalmon kindly pointed out that the first Seiko 5 watch was launched in 1963, making it 60 years old. Having checked the Seiko celebration site mentioned above, it looks like they are celebrating Seiko 5 Sports. Oh well... let's celebrate all Seiko 5's nonetheless!! ✨

Totally agree, bud! So many categories and models to choose from, anyone will surely find one they love. Your SRPG is a beauty. #seiko5at55

May 5 is marked! My SNKL81K1 was my first mechanical watch and I love it to bits. The 5 is like the F-91W of mechanical timepieces.

·

May 5th is very appropriate. Count me in! There's are my three. I'm missing two to complete the collection. That's where the Recraft and SNXS will come in. I think, I hope. Any insights on the SNXS for a large wrist?

Posting our Seiko 5s on Cinco de Mayo. The perfect date. That will definitely work.

Wow man, your 3 pieces are cool. 😎 The Recraft will be an excellent addition. The SNXS7x series is a stunner. It has these dimensions: 37mm diameter | 42.4mm LTL | 11.7mm thickness | 19mm lug width. I think you can easily pull it off. 😉

Wow, I didn't realize the Cinco de Mayo connection. But it definitely will work. Let's make it happen! 🍻 #seiko5at55

Thank you!! I'm missing two so I would have 5 Fives. Next year! Maybe. I want to have 5 Fives for 5 at 55. It's a number thing... Has no meaning. No consequences. It would just be right.

For the SNXS, it's the 37 that worries me a little. Wouldn't it be small on my 8" wrist? It's gorgeous though and I want one.

This would be the 6119-7200R

I've never seen indices like these before. They look like they reach right up to the crystal.

Yeah, having five 5s for this year would be epic. 🍻

Re. the SNXS, I understand your hesitation. If you can, try out one (or a similar sized Seiko 5) on your wrist from your local AD. That'll help you feel the size on wrist. From a visual wearing POV, I think the SNXS will work for you since I notice your wrist is more round-ish than broad/flat. Plus, I've seen others here on WC with large wrists rocking a much smaller timepiece -- perhaps ranging between 32-35mm. So, it boils down to how comfortable you are wearing a slightly smaller cased timepiece on your wrist. If you have no qualms about it, then go for it.

What are the dimensions of your black SRPG field? If I remember correctly, the SRPG is bigger than the SNXS by just 2mm? So, when you think about it, it's quite negligible.

End of the day, you said yourself that it's gorgeous and you want one. So, go for it! 🥳

You nailed it. The SRPH is 39.5ish. I keep looking at it and trying to imagine what it would be like if it were 2mm smaller. I keep telling myself it wouldn't make a difference. Where my hesitation comes from is trying on my GF's watch. A 37mm Citizen. Shouldn't have done that. The watches are too different in terms of looks.

I had the SNXS in my basket at Joma... Took it out. Ordered my Tuna... Then went back for the J1. They didn't have it anymore. Now it's back. I want it. I've been wanting it for a long time. Got discouraged about the size. Still want it now.

I will get it and to hell with the size. It's too pretty to pass on that watch. I don't want to regret now owning one like I regret the Seamaster 300 I should have bought many years ago.

It does help. Helps making me want it more. Damn you!! 😜 It's very versatile. Every bracelet gives this watch a completely different looks. It looks just as comfortable being on a bracelet to dress it up as it does on a rubber band to wear casually.

What's 1mm really. This watch has so much wrist presence. Everything just seems to pop off this dial. Saturday will be my favorite day. There's something about blue and this dark gray dial.

Just note that the lug width is 19mm. But, I'm sure you'll be able to find bracelets and straps to fit, just like I did. It's worth it. 💯

Made an Edit already in the post that it was in 1963 the first Seiko 5 came out. Despite this, let's still celebrate all Seiko 5s!

Coming right on the heels of Star Wars Day, it’s all too much partying for one week! 😂🎉🥳🎊

May the 4th be with you! 😎 Simple celebrations need not be tiresome. 😉🥳

My Seiko 5 Sports Guccimaze (SRPG65K1) to join in the celebration

·

Well I’m in, for today at least 😁👍

Fairly predictably this little SNK809 was my first automatic when the watch madness started a couple of years back. I know there are many other relatively budget-friendly “5’s” still out there and I would like to own more 😁 The only reason I don’t wear this more often is due to the lower WR and my job etc., have to take a bit of care with this one.

I still love it though and wouldn’t let it leave my collection 🥰
