My Son's Growing Watch Collection

From a Hugo Boss he received a few years ago...

To the Bauhaus-style Sternglas Naos quartz he chose as my gift to him for his high school graduation...

I told him last year that I intended to give him another watch as a gift for him finishing his undergrad degree. He finally finished last February 15th, and I had meant to gift him the watch around September or October this year.

However, during his recent visit, his girlfriend gave him this cool Seiko 5 Sports SRPG31. #fieldwatch

Image

Like a number of well-designed field watches, this popular Seiko 5 Sports release looked really good "in the flesh". It suited my son quite well on wrist.

Of course, as a supportive watch enthusiast father, I gave him a handful of nicely matching straps. I was also not remiss in teaching him how to wear #natostraps properly, where the buckle and rings are tucked nicely on the underside of the wrist. 👍🏼

Image

Each day he would go out for his various activities with family or friends, he greatly appreciated the options he had to change out the strap depending on what he was wearing, and what event or activity he was joining.

My son though, is not much of a "field" or "outdoor" type of guy like me. But, when he was a young boy, we would regularly do "exploring" activities in nearby "forested" areas.

Image

We also enjoyed doing road trips together, even up to this day. On our recent road trip to a famous mountain city, I wore my Timex Expedition Scout.

Image

Like father, like son. 😉

Now towards the latter part of my son's visit, he asked me if I had a black strap. He didn't like that much the black with red stripe MN strap seen in the photo above. Unfortunately, I didn't have any 20mm size.

But, on the day before he went back to Germany, in the nick of time... this #natostrap arrived.

He flashed me a big smile, and wore it on his trip back to Germany.😊

Ahh yes... the joys of being a Dad.

Thanks, mam. He actually is not into watches, and is more into gaming and guitar playing. But, he did appreciate the versatility of having various strap options for his new watch. And yes, whenever he visits, we make sure we spend as much quality time as possible, and do the things we always have done since he was a boy. :)

That’s good to hear! Hopefully you can visit him in Germany too! 🥰

Lovely Hakki 👍🏻

Nice bro, is he still here during the meetup in April?

That’s awesome! I’ve been trying to pass along my love of watches to my boys. They seem to appreciate them (or are just very polite and tolerate my obsession) but they just don’t like wearing them all that much. There was a stretch when they were younger that they’d wear one of my divers to camp but that’s as far as it went (they sure added some patina to an orange monster and kinetic diver!). They’re still young though. So we’ll see where it goes.

Yep, most likely when they get older they might appreciate the hobby a bit more. Best thing is not to pressure them. To each his own.

It's wonderful how you watch after him.

Dang. All this time, and I didn't even know you were a dad. Jeez. Good stuff, pare, good stuff.

It's a beautiful thing. I'm amazed that you got lucky and that your son is a budding enthusiast. Mostly the progeny doesn't care around here (that I've observed).

Yes, being a dad has its joys... and its challenges. And yes, I do feel quite blessed to have my son. He actually is not into watches... not yet at least. He's more into gaming, guitar playing, and computer keyboard mod-ing. He gave me a new external personalized keyboard, which I'm using now as I write this reply. But, he did appreciate the versatility of having various strap options for his new watch. :)

Oh dang, thought he might have caught the bug. Ah well, still time left.

That's outstanding, Hakki.

You gave him a fine watch & it's so cool to see you encourage the habit.

My sons are both mechanics (one airline, one diesel) so they both have G-Shocks.

Trying to get them to appreciate mechanicals now.😎

Thank you, Mark. The Sternglas Naos quartz I gave him for his high school graduation was actually his choice out of a short list. I gave him a $200 budget and some recommended brands and styles that would fit the budget. He was quite happy with what he got.

The SRPG31 featured in my story was given to him by his girlfriend. I was more than glad to give him some straps to add versatility to his watch. Who knows, strap changing may get him into watch collecting too. ;)

Go ahead and influence your mechanic sons into analog /mechanical timepieces. I'm guessing it'll be much easier for them to appreciate. Cheers!

Absolutely. Besides, given their age, encouraging the hobby will only cost ME money. I do let them borrow a watch when they feel the need to wear one. Luckily the 16 year old and I are the same wrist size, so no adjustment needed when it’s something on a bracelet.

Thank you very much, good sir, and you're also most welcome. I'm glad our simple story encouraged you. I also appreciate your words of encouragement. I have many shortcomings and weaknesses, as any father would admit. But, your spurring makes me want to do my best even more, to support my son. Cheers to all of us striving fathers and men!
