New watch purchase - thoughts on how to decide?

So I recently got some unexpected cash as I got more back in my tax refund than expected. While I’m going to save most of it, I’d also like to treat myself to a new watch.

I have five main contenders at this moment:

  • Serica 8315

  • Omega Seamaster

  • Fears Brunswick 38

  • Damasko DS30

  • Formex essence 39

So, currently in my collection I mainly rotate between my Grand Seiko SBGA415 and my Stowa Marine, with the GS getting the most wrist time.

My style is not incredibly toolish. I work an office job and I am not overly rough with my watches, but I am a big believer in “wear your watches” so I only really take them off when there is a high risk of damage, like working with certain tools etc.

I love my GS, as it is casual but also nice enough to wear to the office seamlessly. Goes up and down very well. I’d say this is squarely within my watch “comfort zone” of what I would call “dressy sporty” watches like the GS, Cartier santos, Omega Globemaster, etc.

Now this brings me to my decision. I’ve been interested in getting something a bit more casual looking than the GS.

Of the watches above, the Fears squarely falls into the dressy sporty category, and I have tried it on in person and loved it. Just such a great brand. I’d probably be most interested in the green dial with the bracelet.

However, I’ve also always loved the Omega Seamaster. The only issue is that it’s by far the most expensive watch listed and it is also the largest. 42mm for my 6.5” wrist is larger than ideal for me. Especially in the white dial (my fave) I’m worried it will look too large. I’ve tried it on in person as well. Although it’s not crazy, it’s pushing my comfort, and I’d hands down get one if it was 39mm.

The Formex I’ve tried on as well and enjoyed. I like the case suspension system and the quick change system. The problem I’ve always had is that I never found the dials to really capture me, but the recent sector dial variant really changes that for me. Objectively, it’s just such a phenomenal watch, and I think would be a lot of fun.

The Damasko is something I’ve been interested in for a while. Definitely more casual. But I really enjoy the idea that it has a different case material and would just be so different than what I currently have. Really a totally different niche to fill and would look great on natos and other straps too.

Lastly, the Serica. I’ve been really interested in the Serica for quite some time. The Brown dial gmt is really interesting and I love that. I think the end links are super cool too and I really appreciate that it’s a diver gmt style but also a little more dressed up than others. However, I’m worried the brown will lose its hold on me over time and I might not enjoy it in the future. I’m not big on selling watches (just because of the hassle), so I’d like something to be able to stay in the collection for a while.

Any thoughts on how to go about deciding? I’m not so much looking for an opinion on which is objectively the best watch, but really how to focus my decision making so that I can make the right choice.

Of the photos, the Fears, Omega, and Formex are on my wrist.

Hands down Fears for me.👑

It's sounding like the Fears is inside your comfort zone if you will.

The Serica is another winner though. People who know... know.

If you're an outdoors person I'm wondering if your dial would fade to a "tropical" hue.

If I were an outdoorsy guy I'd go with the Serica. It's Fears for me.👌

I put a picture of the watch as wallpaper of my phone, and rotate them to see which makes me happiest.

When I buy an expensive watch, I keep the same watch as wall paper for a few weeks to see if I fall deeper in love or fall out of love.

Personally, I'm a fan of the omega and the damasko. I've been seriously eyeing the dc56 recently because damasko are so over-engineered in precisely the way I like. The damasko is definitely the furthest from what it seems you usually wear, so that's either a big selling point or a big risk depending on how you feel. The omega is a pretty straightforward, so not much to say.

Something I might consider in your position is whether I'm buying something that I'd want to wear in the same scenarios I want to wear the grand seiko in, or if I'm buying something that will be a good option for the times I don't want to wear the grand seiko. I don't really like when my watches are too competitive with each other.

Man I would like to help but you are all over the place, both with watch style and price level😉

If choosing from all above Omega is no brainer decision but might be to big for you. If not that then go with Serica

OMEGA

Daft not to if you have the opportunity. Buy used, if you don't love it after a few months you'll be able to sell it & get your money back.

·

If you got enough back to save AND by a watch costing several grand, you really must be bad at math.

How can you screw up withholding that badly?

Remember, that is your money you let the government use, interest free, for a year.

·

Maybe when you decide which watch to wear in the morning, try picturing adding the fears if it was in the mix? The square shape would lend itself well in different situations I reckon.

The Formex looks like it was made for you

·

FEARS all the way

The Formex looks like it was made for you

But i also agree the Formex looks like a match

·

Formex Essence gets my vote (disclaimer - I own an Essence 39).

·

Serica or omega

·

I personally am attracted by the Formex and the Damasko, but it's your watch.

Trust your guts, you know already what you want and what doesn't make the cut. If none is standing out, it might be worth waiting a bit.

·

Oh man, I've considered buying all but the Fears at some point so my vote is.... I don't know.

·

Definitely the Fears imo. They make beautiful watches

·

Damasko with yellow seconds

·

The Fears Brunswick 38 speaks to me. I like the green, but i love the champagne dail.

Haha you are 100% correct, it is all over the place isn’t it 😅
