I was in your position two years ago, and for me, it was the BB58. But for me it couldn't have been anything else. Big-crown sub case with snowflake hands, MN blue dial, and stark white lume? Pure catnip, and my love hasn't faded. I'm actually wearing it as I type.
That said if I were in the same position this year, I'd seriously consider the BB54. Charming, charming watches.
You're off to a great start! My dad's Longines (his engagement gift from my mom) started my collection. I have an emotional connection to a few of my watches, but a positive family connection is something extra.
I definitely prefer metal, but lately my skin has been reacting to them. Even my beloved Explorer. Seriously... I haven't worn a metal band in a month and I tried the Explorer today: it only took a few hours to react. This is my one allergy? Watch bracelets? For real?

It seems more likely to me that this could be explained as a broken trace, solder point, or wire. In that case a change of orientation or temperature from body heat might break the circuit, and setting the watch down or letting it cool (off the wrist) might "fix" it.
I've also botched battery replacement in my Ironman before by failing to put the sticker back in the right place, which would intermittently short out the battery and kill the power.
