Rolex Sub prices basically kept track with inflation until the 1980's when they started skyrocketing into "Luxury" territory - but 50s-80's they were the equivalent of $1,500-$1,600 dollars today. This is, as I have been lamenting, how much a "nice watch" should cost. It's not junk, you're paying enough to know it's special, but it also doesn't require going into debt. What can you do?
Its a LOT more than inflation. $150 in 1955 for example is $1730 now. many $1800 Rolexes are you finding.?
true. the reason is that inflationnumbers are always manipulated and true inflation is much highr every year. but that is the problem with fiat currencies: your purchase power gets weaker and weaker the more they print 🤷 they only thing you can do to protect yourself from that is saving in the hardest asset...

My dad bought his Rolex Explorer 1016 back new in 1967 for a few hundred. He saved his lifeguard money, and it was dead easy to buy.
