Which Speedmaster?

Which is the Speedmaster you would get? Going to an event at an Omega boutique next week and fairly certain a Speedmaster is in my future. Obviously, the decision for which model is subjective, but I’m interested in people’s thoughts based on my concerns/desires… The SPEEDMASTER is the quintessential OMEGA watch; I already have the AquaTerra Worldtimer and love it, but it’s not a recognizable Omega to most people. I like the idea of having the essential/core offering from any brand in my collection, so some part of me leans toward the standard Speedmaster Professional (MoonWatch crystal sandwich). On the other hand, I love the dial color of the new Speedmaster ‘57 in red, though the case diameter at 40.5 may be a bit small for my 7.5”+ wrist, and it breaks the idea of being a quintessential Omega piece. Finally, there’s the Apollo 8 “Dark Side of the Moon”; I love the story and celebration of this watch; the amazing moon dial (which might play a nice ‘complement’ to my laser created Worldtimer’s earth). I love the black ceramic durability, and the increased case diameter…BUT the color scheme and leather strap would be ‘atypical‘ for a guy that usually prefers watches on stainless steel bracelets. I worry it will look a little better suited for the wrist of a motorcycle rider than a Tesla geek.

I'd get the Pagani one. They sent stuff to the moon too.

I'd start at a Snoopy and settle for the Pro.

Obviously Snoopy would be #1 if it were possible to get…

Does not hurt to ask if you are there. :-)

Out of the three If I had to pick one I would go with the MoonWatch Pro.  It just feels more special and its by far more recognizable.  I have the 3861 and a blue 57.  I have a 6.75 inch wrist and for me the MoonWatch wears smaller then the 57 and is a bit more comfortable for me.  I do like the micro adjust on the 57 clasp though.  The 57's Lug-to-Lug is longer and make it feel larger even though the diameter is smaller.  I love having a date on a Speedmaster so I went with both.

Here they are side by side.  To me the 57 looks bigger.

I approach each purchase assuming it’ll be my last. I always know what I want next, but you just never know what life will throw at you. Given that, I buy the thing that typifies the model/brand the most (unless I really love a special model). So when it was time for me to purchase a Speedmaster, I went with the professional hesalite. I’m not gentle, so the sapphire sandwich made more sense, but I bought like it was my last Speedmaster.  Assuming I could only have one, I had to go with the classic.

There‘s no watch whose history is as important to me.  Yes, it’s a great, classic chrono, but on this one I’m buying history as well. So I chose to stick as close to the original as modern Omega produces.

There are several models I’d buy if money were no object, but to me you go with the classic your first time out.

Whatever you choose, it’ll be great.

Do you care about manual wind versus automatic? If so, that could help in the elimination. I have the original Speedmaster 57 as well as the new Speedmaster Pro 3861 sapphire sandwich, and I like them both equally but for different reasons. I prefer the size of the Speedy Pro, especially the thinness compared to the Speedmaster 57, but I prefer the look of the Speedmaster 57. I also prefer the 2 subdial arrangement from the 57, with the minutes and hours in the same sub-dial, along with the benefit of having a date window. I enjoy the ritual of winding the Speedy Pro, but appreciate the convenience of the automatic movement in the 57.  I don't think you'd go wrong with either, especially considering the new 57 is thinner than the older one. With that said, the Apollo 8 DSOTM is an awesome piece, and if I ever stumbled across a deal on one of those, I'd add it to my collection without hesitation.

The speedy pro Hesalite for the historic dna 🧬 every time. If I didn’t have one, I’d regret it deeply if I chose another over it on the beginning.

Thanks, that’s really helpful.
