The Apple Watch thing...

Should this be considered worthy of our passion for horology?

Yes, but some people are followers and not leaders.

Who are the followers and who are the leaders here ? ☺️

If your great grandchildren won't be able to wear and use it can you honestly say that it's a real watch? It's a wrist computer that tells the time in my opinion. It will be outdated how long from now? For the price of them I can buy a watch that my great grandchildren's, great grandchildren's, great grandchildren can still wear.

Honestly... NO ! 😂

Imagine a 50-year-old Rolex on your wrist. Then imagine wearing today's Apple Watch 50 years from now.

Nothing wrong with the watches at the time of debut. Wine will ripen then sour with age, but know that honey never goes bad...

·

Certainly not

·

Integrated calendar w/ vibrating alerts, moon phase, voice activated chrono and countdown timer, >100m water resistance, sapphire sandwich for $400. Disabled the fluff alerts and enjoy 😂

·

Nope.

·

Absolutely not

·

It is the ultimate tool watch, but should be treated like quartz watches and all the Swatch X collabs…built in obsolescence.

It depends what direction one wants to go.

Children today can't read an analog watch. Throw some Roman numerals on there and they won't even know which way is up.

The use of the word “horology” has always bugged me slightly. Horology is much deeper than wristwatches. I’d call myself a watch enthusiast.

·

I'd consider it a threat to horology. The one good thing was that it made people think about wearing something on their wrist again.

·

If this is a watch then my phone is a pocket watch.

Remember when Apple first launched their watch they had a solid gold model, I wonder how many people who bought one (if there were any buyers) have them as heirlooms to pass on to their kids. The Apple Watch, there are other smart watches available, is a multifunction watch and it’s ok to love it but take it for what it is, a piece of tech and is of little horological interest.

·

Nope....

·

Naw. Well in my opinion anyhoo. Its a computer that will be obsolete in a wee while.

I’ve tried them. Mostly relegated to a fitness tracker for me now. I prefer being disconnected as the connectivity was more of a distraction than a benefit for my circumstances.

I view them as a wrist computer that happens to have the form factor of a wristwatch. But the need to charge daily and planned obsolescence make a “dumb” watch preferable for me.

Frankly, this thing is practically a smartwatch without the connectivity. And it’s $20 with a 10-year battery. 😉

Yeah it doesn't notify you when you have a new comment on Watch Crunch ? 😅

Horology is the measurment of time, not manufacturing. Or do I remember it wrong?

We can agree to disagree :)

You could say the same for a great many quartz watches though, and particularly older digital watches. Who knows how long the batteries will be available, and once the module goes they're just landfill.

·

Ahmmm! Snob alert! Look man you can't trust a printed circuit board with your life.

If the robots take over you will have no control.

Not to mention mechanical watches are emp proof.

End rant

You can disagree, they are thwo things that come up when I read the definitions about horology:

  • The science of studying time.

  • Designing and making clocks and watches.

This menas that my statement about manufacturing isnt correct either.

But, there is no mention of quality, longevity, planed obsolesence and so on.

So a Applewatch that goes obsolet after a few years but tells the time is a smuch a horologic instrument as a wristwatch that was build to last decaded, or not?

·

The amount of engineering involved in that Apple Watch is in another world. “Horology” is too constrained of a word and only focuses on its most minimal accomplishments of telling the time. It’s along the lines of giving a Kentucky derby trophy to a Tesla Model S-Plaid.
