Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic

Hi all,

Does anyone own one of these lovely creatures? If so, what are the positives and negatives? I'm looking for a reliable field watch and this one really stands out. Love that big crown, those syringe hands and that little pop of red.

Thanks!

I bought one about about 4 years ago, overall a great watch. The proportions are amazing & I couldn't get over this when I first saw it. It's also very versatile & looks good on a number of types of straps. Negatives maybe the lug to lug is a bit long at 47mm, the watch is quite simple with an all brushed case apart from the bezel, so maybe bit boring. These are the only negatives I can think of. Buying one of these pre owned is a no brainer really. One thing to note that the previous commenter mentioned is that the early versions of this model in around 2018 had the 2824 in them with the higher beat rate of 28,800 vph but a lower power reserve of 38 hours, hope this helps

Thanks very much.

Thanks for the tip on the movements. Maybe I'll try to find a pre owned version that had the old one.

I currently own the 38mm.  Its great.  Very well finished, thin and slides under a cuff.  80 hour power reserve is nice if thats your thing.  As a previous poster mentioned regulation could be an issue due to these being "laser regulated"  I'm not going to pretend I fully undersand that part, but from what I understand if regulation is needed its got to go back to Hamilton.   Mine currently runs about +3 sec/day so I'm happy with it.  The included leather strap was suprisingly high quality.  Its pretty thick, nice brushed hardware and is durable.

I believe the difficulty with regulation on the powermatic 80 is that it has a free spring balance, it improves positional variance but has to be adjusted by two screw on the balanc wheel itself

I have the 38mm on that same leather strap as pictured (although I rotate between roughly 10, it’s a strap monster).

It’s such an amazing watch. Mine runs nearly perfect time and is so well proportioned. Only drawback is the polished bezel can be a bit of a scratch magnet but thats any polished steel for ya.

I have the 38mm too. I really like it, and it’s been very accurate. Usually under +2 spd. The only thing I didn’t like about it was the original strap, which I swapped out for this Fluco brown leather strap.

Absolutely! The whole "laser regulation" is just marketing. Any good watchmaker with experience serving different types of movements could regulate the H-10. It has a freesprung balance with weights on the balance wheel that is adjusted with a screw. This changes the inertia of the wheel itself instead of the typical method of adjustment which changes the length of the hairspring.

Great choice for a replacement strap. Looks great!

I’m on my third Khaki Auto. I have big wrists so the 42mm versions are my preference. I “accidentally“ won my first two bidding on eBay. One black dial, H10 on the bracelet and the second was a tan dial, leather band, old movement. I absolutely loved both for different reasons. I switched the tan model to a NATO and it felt like a proper field watch with a vintage flair. My black dial was on the killer bracelet and the H10 made it a great piece in my rotation without having to worry about it stopping every other day. My biggest complaint with the bracelet model was it competed with other black/stainless watches in my collection and it wore it less because of that. I recently re-sold both on eBay to upgrade to the new titanium model and it is such an amazing watch. You can’t go wrong with a Khaki Field, 10/10 recommend.

Solid watch I should say...

I had the 42mm that I sold for two reasons: a bit to big for my taste and doubts about water resistance. I did not put it in water by there are people that suggest the water resistance might not be the best. Also it hasn't screw down crown.

Another thing that annoyed me was the discovery that the date window makes de 15 hour numbers to be a bit too much towards the center making the dial a bit less balanced. In that respect I'd advice for the 38mm that looks stunning and would be more appropriate for a field watch that tents to go unnoticed.

All this said I really like the design of the watch that looks in place in almost any situation.

Thanks for the response. Do you have some reliable sellers to recommend for Ebay purchasing?

I own the 38mm with the H-10 movement. It keeps good time and is a reliable piece, an all-round field watch with a good case design that sits well on the wrist. The pop of red at the seconds hand is mesmerising to look at, and the big crown is a joy to wind. I also like that as an entry-level watch it has a display case back which as one of my first automatic watches drew me further into this crazy watch world 😅 (despite some purists would opine that field watches should have a closed case back).

What I don't like is the lack of anti-reflective coating on the front of the crystal. Hamilton watches and this one in particular are known to be very reflective at times and it can be difficult to see the dial under certain lighting. It's also one of the reasons why I don't wear this watch to work as often as I want to. I work in a very busy and high stress setting where every second counts, and I realize that the extra time needed to look more closely at the dial due to the frequent reflections added up to be too much of a hassle. But of course this may not apply to everyone.

I bought mine used from the previous owners on eBay. One of them came with the box and papers. I rolled the dice with the other one. I haven’t had bad luck on eBay yet.

Is the steel bracelet really that good?
