Has time run out for the watch YouTubers?

Everything on YouTube is cyclical, and things are often quite slow at this time of year, but this month seems to be particularly awful for new watch content.

As you know, I'm not a big fan of "influencers", but I do go round the bigger players in the watch scene from time to time to see what mischief or drama they are into now.

Owing to the fact that we no longer have Kaysia's "Bites" to keep us informed, please allow me to recap what I've seen for you instead.

  • The "luxury watch" guys have apparently all abandoned talking about watches to get involved in other things such as boring politics, cars, vacations, and birthday parties. Yes, that's how bad it's become.

  • The "affordable watch" guys are treading water with microbrands, going back in time to review AliExpress watches which have already been available for years, or have disappeared into the abyss of a permanent hiatus without even a cordial farewell.

  • In fact, the only YouTuber who has reviewed a new watch, and a watch so new that it's not even available in the UK yet, is Russell reviewing the latest Casio on "The Mad Watch Collector" channel. Got to give him credit there for keeping things fresh.

As YouTube is my primary source of entertainment, things are looking pretty bleak right now. Maybe it's a global feeling of ennui which has infected everyone.

How many more watch YouTubers will simply disappear because there's nothing left to talk about?

What do you think?

I made a review of the Zelos Eagle 2 a few days ago. But then again, nobody watches my channel. 😢

In America, we’re preparing for the madness in November…

Yeah, Relative Time beat you to it by reviewing it last week. 😢

And Ben semi-reviewed it yesterday too.

A bit like how chocolate Easter eggs were already in the shops here before Christmas, I suppose. Nothing like being premature, is there? LOL

So did I. Seems we published the same day the embargo was over. Seven days ago now. But of course, I have a way smaller channel and he's so much better. 😂

He's better than all of us. His Spaghetti Scameti promo says so. 😉

I wish I could post the meme I got sent earlier, but I'd be banned. LOL

Yep. Been dry as day old toast lately.

But don't fret...Watches & Wonders is coming soon in April...

Then you will see loads of reviews of watches that very few people can afford...

...and the endless speculation leading up to the event about what new boring watch Rolex will release...will it adjust the case size by a fraction of a millimeter...ooh or maybe they will move the crown...

Then you will have all the interviews with the watch executives in their booths by the usual suspects...

Last year I saw them all roaming around the show looking around to see if anyone noticed them.

I did not give any of them the satisfaction 😉

Don't watch YouTubers.

I know Jody from JOMW is moving house and updating his new studio, so not surprised if he slows down. Random Rob seems to just be chugging along fine as he is wont to do so I'm guessing it's the winter slump finally catching up to watch reviewers? At least, the guys who takes a gander on microbrands and AliX offerings.

Though I like it when the luxury brand watch influencers start to shut up. Guess the 'watches as investment' train has run out of steam, eh?

·

I’m already bracing for the deluge of “Predictions for Watches & Wonders”, “Rolex Watches & Wonders Rumors”, “Rolex Discontinues X at Watches & Wonders”, “Rolex Introduces X at Watches & Wonders”, “Rolex Disappoints at Watches & Wonders” content coming soon.

That really is the worst time of the year in terms of YouTube watch content, utterly boring.

However, in the affordable end of things, JOMW is still posting despite moving houses. MWC’s channel seems to have been taking off for the last year and I’m generally liking his content lately. Ben’s Watch Club always takes his time with uploads (nothing wrong about that). Things are sure slower, but there’s still content to be enjoyed.

I think Anthony from time piece gentleman killed, murder and exposed the luxury watch market. Most of these people lived on consignment pieces and many got caught lying, scamming, even selling stolen pieces to people dumb enough to buy from them.

Imagine stealing 5 mil and getting caught living in a public storage LOL:

Either that or the payola stopped.

For so many channels, starting out requires investment. I personally got into debt growing the channel. When brands start sending you watches, the financial relief for me was huge. The trouble then is the channels all start too look generic, but creators aren't getting poor! It's about balance. If I could only make content with watches I have purchased, I would. But that wouldn't last long! I'm not made of money.

An example of success is I made a video about 15 watches under £60 and it did really well. It cost me nothing to make, but made about $60 in as revenue.

An example of a flop is releasing a review of a watch dozens of reviewers got sent (not to my knowledge at the time) and we all dropped our content around the same time. Understandably the views were woeful.

But this watch can be sold for a bit, and that massively helps purchase watches people may want to hear about more!

It's a tricky thing to balance. People have bills to pay. Creating content costs hours of family time (my choice, I'm happy making content) so getting a few quid in the bank softens the complaints from the Mrs!

I love russel, he always brings a genuine enthusiasm that is contagious

·

If time had run out, the so called influencers have hastened their own demise. The same old watch brands featured ad nauseum. Mix it up a little. No, a lot.

·

I dont mind the influencers. Theyre just making a buck. I always remember, theyre just guys with a pod cast or channel who were just regular guys with regular jobs some doing anything but watches. It was their hobby or passion, and who doesnt have a video studio in the palm of their hands nowadays, even if u were a ex- teacher, lawyer, ex-cop now tactical edc guru, etc. go get your money. Even here setting up a platform which will eventually shill products and monetize is as they say just good business. Just sign up and you're in their walled garden, enjoy the flowers and take a big whiff😄 Now where is that Hammy Khaki Avaition Pilots review i need pronto 😂 get on it fellas. And as always keep up the good work!

·

You Tube for entertainment is the proper attitude. Certainly do not go there for reliable information, for the most part. 😉

This happened to my friend's MoonSwatch when he was at the beach last summer.

Bit late to the party here but it’s worth pointing out that Jan/Feb are really poor for Adsense revenue so a lot of creators reduce content production through this time. I on the other hand have plenty of nonsense to spout so no stopping me

How come? Reduced consumer spending post Christmas?

You and T Mosso from watchbox.com are the dawgs, seperately

Yeah, pretty much. Adsense revenue comes as a percentage of the ad spend from brands advertising in the pre roll and mid roll adverts in videos. Post Christmas they aren’t doing a big advert push anymore as people don’t really buy stuff after Christmas.

And thank you!
