What is your hero watch?

So, in marketing, a hero product is a brand's pride and joy--bestseller, centerpiece, the end-all and be-all--something that a brand is probably best known for. Probably. Nothing is definitive in life, marketing doubly so.

Audemars Piguet has its Royal Oak, Patek Philippe has their Nautilus, Vacheron Constantin has... uhm... Overseas? Maybe.

In our individual collections we probably have this. I realize that asking watch collectors what their pride and joy is is a pathway to madness. "How dare you ask me to pick just one. I have many many favorites, many many centerpieces." Okay, calm down. It is difficult to point to just the one hero watch. Maybe you have many. Apple has the iPhone and Macbook.

But, if you were forced to. If someone pointed a gun to your head and demanded that you identify your ONE hero watch, what would it be?

I'm not talking about the most expensive piece or the most flex-worthy. I'm talking about a watch that is your pride and joy, the watch that perhaps you love the most (again, probably impossible given you're on WatchCrunch), the one watch that boosts you up when you wear it, gives you superpowers of confidence and reassurance of your place under the sun, the watch that makes you feel lucky and loved (perhaps because it's a gift from your favorite person). You know, your hero watch.

Mine is my 1972 Glashutte manual wind. It's a unique piece that I feel represents my style. It was a gift from the ex and since we broke up I haven't worn it. But that doesn't mean I don't love it. I look forward to the day when I could wear it without hurting as bad and, ultimately, find joy again in the act of wearing. It is just a watch after all. But objectively speaking, this is my most unique piece. It has the right amount of gravitas, playfulness, and "vintage" that I think of it as my hero watch.

What's yours?

The Glashutte? I'm not ready to do that just yet. I can't even look at it these days. Hahaha.

You don’t have to look at it, that’s what I wanna do ;-)

Jokes aside maybe some day.

Yeah, I'm sure you'll see it in person someday.

That would be my Sector 650 Automatic from the "No Limits" collection. My hero.

I got this way back when nobody wanted them because “Eww, green”. I even got it with a discount from an AD for that reason. But the green dial is mesmerizing to me. It gives the watch it’s unique character.

When they put black dials in the Hulk and Smurf, they lost both their character, imho. I think the Hulk is peak Rolex.

Tina had it right, “We don’t need another hero…”

But I’m going Nomos too:

For me that's a hard question because so many watches helped me decide for my main watch.

My hero watch:

Hanhart 417es

Image

Thanks to the Seiko Flighty and the history of aviation helped me go down the rabbit hole finally getting to the Hanhart 417. Something about less known pilot watches that I find very appealing.

It’s a beautiful piece 👌🏻 I hope will be able to move on and enjoy it again soon 💪🏻

Thats a work of art

I'm not a Rolex fan but this is the best-looking of all the Submariners, in my opinion. I can't imagine it ever being "eww."

Thanks. It will happen sooner rather than later.

I actually feel like my first rolex my oyster perpetual has magick powers and I’m not sure how they got there

Sometimes also referred to as the "halo" piece. The model that shines a flattering light on the brand. At car dealerships this is often the vehicle that will be front and center or on an elevated platform. Most buyers will select something else but they feel good that their vehicle was made by the same company.

My hero watch is my Mr. Jones Perfectly Useless Afternoon. Wedding gift from my wife and it's arguably their most iconic design.

This watch makes me so happy every time I see it

The Omega Speedmaster 3861!

The working man’s watch. I have more expensive watches than this one. But Timex has a deep history with the working man.

Farmers, construction workers, mail men, police officers at one point wore a Timex including executives.

Just makes sense to me.

I have "nicer" watches, but if I need a go anywhere, do anything watch it is probably my trusty Orient Kamasu. Close second would be my Timex Weekender with the indigo. More of a tie really.

·

I have Brown Lump, my 1977 Citizen CQ Solar Cell. Quirky and odd, yet also rare and cool.

Totally with you. I own this one too (or a sibling). It’s clear, honest, hard working (and loud ticking). ‚The working man’s watch.‘ totally with you

My Daytona’s. I just love them for thier size, robustness/reliability and drop dead gorgeous IMHO.

Thanks. It has been through the trenches with me and has never failed. And that dial is mesmerizing. Yours isn't so bad either other than the story that's stuck to it. That's my birth year so I will wear it for you until you're ready. LOL 😂

·

Hanhart 417ES Red Lion for sure

Hero watch would have to be the Raymond Weil Parsifal. First it was the piece that started the watch addiction for me and second because it has maintained true to the same design for 20+ years. It is what it is and isn’t going to change regardless of trends or styles
