How I decided to buy a mechanical watch

When I got interessted in mechanical watches I started looking around for „that one watch“ that would legitimize spending a fair (or - regarding its functionality - „absurd“) amount of money. I like pilot-style watches and was searching for something robust and reliable: At least 10 ATM, ideally swiss movement and a seethrough caseback (i mean why not buy quartz if you can‘t see the magic?) I think I‘ve found a very good model woth the Sinn 556A which rocks 20 ATM and appears to be a good choice for everyday use. But will it really remain the „one-watch-collection I‘ve planned? I guess we all know the answer.

It’s not a bad place at all to start!

Welcome to the Crunch!

·

Congrats! That’s a great piece to start with!

·

Great practical and stylish choice. The 556 is a perfect "one watch" for anyone who doesn't dress up too often.

·

Great do it all sports watch!

·

Yeah the 556 is that understated piece of luxury

·

Great choice! 556 is a fine watch. H-Link is comfy, too.

·

Now that is a starting piece 🤌🔥🔥

Congratulations 🎉

It's funny that people often talk about owning one watch as if there's some magical watch out there. A perfect watch. A watch that will tick every box and have no flaws, one that will allow you to finally stop looking around at other watches. But the watch isn't the problem. You are (me too, and everybody else).

We don't keep looking for more watches because we don't have a perfect watch, we keep searching because that's what we love. You could easily wear any of your watches for the rest of your life if you chose to. So what it's a diver or dress watch, there are plenty of people blissfully unaware that their watch isn't suited to the current task/location/event. They don't notice or care, and why should they? Absolutely nothing happens if you wear a Seiko diver to a wedding or a dress watch to the beach. Nothing at all.

So no, you haven't found your one watch. But not because there's anything wrong with it, but because (I'm guessing) you still love the hunt. Watches are like women, none are perfect. Nobody stays with just one because she's perfect or the single most beautiful or funniest in the world. They stay with just one because they really like that one and have made a choice not to pursue the other interesting ones. You and I and everybody else will settle down with one watch when we've decided we no longer enjoy hunting for others. Until then, enjoy the variety.

Great watch. Miss my Sinn 836, one day I’ll have it back!

·

Nice choice, it's a solid start. 👌

·

Just the first in a long line of frantically-pleasing impulse buys…until your watch drawer is chock a block.

·

When I considered the same thought experiment, it came down to two:

  • Sinn 556A or I

  • Longines Conquest (2023, 39mm edition)

Trade the display case back for another 100M of water resistance, I guess…

But I bought this one:

The Sinn is a great watch & excellent place to start. The other recommendations are awesome

·

I love my 556A

·

Nice choice. Fair warning, things do tend to multiply....

·

Great start! I wish I started with a Sinn 😭

·

Wow, I give you the 🏆 for today. Bravo! All I would say is get a G-Shock square for active stuff and be done. If you want a dress watch go for it but man what a great first pick.

·

Cant go wrong with a Sinn - good choice!

·

Really nice choice to start, congrats!

·
