Rolex’s Small Sporty Brother: The Explorer Two Tone Review

I’m so impressed with the two tone option. In a world where the queue for sports Rolexes are few and far between, sometimes going for the half gold option is pretty cool. Some have said these are more appealing to younger crowds cos it’s different.

pros: I love the heritage of the explorer. I initially wanted the stainless steel option but it wasn’t available. I had seen a few reviews on the half gold and was inspired. It can be used for both casual and formal occasions. It‘s got the robust sports feel so we ignore the dings and bumps. It provides the explorer feel to its heritage. I do recommend this but if the gold is too flashy please wait for the stainless option. Finally, this watch is meant to explore. 36mm the way it was made from the beginning. I love how I can play a game of tennis and head to a dinner event with this same timepiece. No worries!!!

Things To consider: half gold is flashy and draws attention. Should you want to be discreet the SS option is better. We are meant to use this for sports, the gold does scratch and dull quickly. It does wear a bit small. But for those sticky on heritage 36mm is true to its roots.

Overall, I’m glad and happy with this purchase. It gives alternatives when you’ve got other sports models. The two tone option is great as it becomes more versatile. Would I recommend this? Yes, if you have other sports models in Stainless Steel. No, if you are outdoors a lot.

Final Verdict: buy a watch that you love and not forced into. Sometimes other models in the same line provide flexible options. This watch does that for me. I’m glad I get to wear it while playing sports and then off to a dinner event. It does stand out when choosing other watches for the day.

Great looking watch 😃🤘

My dad wore a 1967 Explorer for over 50 years.  I sold it last year for him (he’s mid 80s and wanted to cash out, he was astounded at its value)

It was a great watch and lasted amazingly well for him.  He lived the explorer life as well: professional diver , tugboat captain, national swimmer, gymnast, boat broker, ..I can go on!

You should strive for that as well!! 👊

Never heard of wrapping in cotton wool. where would you wrap it?

Sorry it's an English saying, just means you don't do anything that could damage the watch/item

Wow. Learn something new everyday.

I was fortunate to try this watch at an AD and must admit it looks so much more elegant and refined than the steel only version. Can't imagine what it will look like when it ages though.

Incredible story and pictures! He embodied many things - the true Explorer wearer seems like a small part of it. I would be tempted to give him the money just to have a little peace of his legacy. I think you are living his legacy so no watch needed

Sold it at peak Rolex value.  It was a single owner, with papers, 1967 1016 Explorer.  Sold for about 4x what I considered too expensive for a watch 😂

Dad in his heyday was a little bit the “worlds most interesting man”.  he was friends with a Great pacific octopus, head lifeguard of Spanish Banks, lived in Kitzbuhel Austria as a ski guide, he had a habit of doing handstands on the edge of tall buildings since it was funny, it goes on and on 🤪

Very kind of you to say!!  Yup I felt tortured to sell his watch.  But, his watch isn’t literally him  - so I also try to be an elite athlete and adventurer, a great family man and successful provider; dad set a high bar💪❤️

Great review, and glad you’re loving your two-tone Explorer. I own the stainless model for the exact reasons you described, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted by the gold…

We both have amazing dad stories. Thank you for sharing. Yes at the end of the day, a watch is just a watch. We have everlasting memories. Thanks for this reminder.

Thanks for the encouragement. Funny how I have a friend with the stainless and keeps asking me if he can buy my two tone off me.

Thanks so much man.  Glad you liked the review.  Do you have the 39mm Explorer?

I do not have the 39mm. Always prefer the 36mm size explorer. I feel that the 124270 is a combination of vintage and modern. You might want to give it some time if you are used to wearing big size watches. For me I feel comfortable wearing it. One of my favourite watch!

Me too bro. I think traditional and original is the best.

Thanks man

Thanks for the review! Didn't expect a 2-tone to be "easier" to obtain though! 😭

·

Great post, I was looking for a review on the two tone! I think the two tone Explorer is a sleeper hit and will become popular as the years go on. I think two tone is back with a younger crowd (myself included), exactly as you said. Hopefully will be able to get one of these!

Thanks for this. Yeah I still continue to use this watch and people stop and as me what Rolex is it.
