Say you have an automatic/mechanical watch that you wear 1-2 times a week. Do you always keep it wound or do you let it stop in-between days of wear?

The watch in the photo is the Frederique Constant Highlife (FC-303N4NH6B)

For my automatics (which all have dates), I'll wind every 2 days to keep them going when I'm not wearing them. I let my hand-wound no date stop and will wind when I need to wear it.

·

If it’s just time only watches I don’t mind letting them stop. Anything else I’ll contemplate keeping them running depending on the watch, like a moon phase cuz those suck to set

·

If I actually am wearing it every week I will keep it on a winder.. Otherwise i let it stop

Get more watches. Then you will have an easier rotation to manage.

I normally switch watch at the weekend, using a quartz / beater watch during the week when I have to go somewhere / do something that is not appropriate for the Watch of the Week.

I've always let them run down, It's easy enough to wind and set the date next time I wear them.

Letting your watch take a rest (unless it's a perpetual calendar which is a nightmare to reset) is a good thing.

My analogy is this...you don't leave your car running in the garage waiting for next time you drive it (even if it is an electric car and produces no fumes). It's best to let mechanical objects rest when not in use so you don't wear down the mechanical parts too soon. Service on your watch can be expensive.

I generally store on a winder

Agree 100%

I asked a watchmaker friend of mine. He said that he thinks of them as machines and machines shouldn't run 24/7 if they don't need to. He also added that the synthetic oils used in modern watches are so good that they shouldn't congeal with this kind of use.

·

If they work 24/7 the useful life until the first service will be sooner. If it’s not necessary to use it every day, let it rest.

·

I will shake once a month or wind them or wear it.

Cheers!

My nightly routine is to pick clothes and match a watch to go with it and wind it for the next day. I have stopped adjusting the dates especially on gmt watches

·

I actually like winding watches by hand so I am very willing to buy a manual winding mechanical even though I have a bunch of automatics that can be hand wound. Winding a watch back to life kinda feels like starting up an early propeller driven aircraft

I keep my watches wound and set to the correct time.  It's part of my morning routine, after thanking God for restoring my soul and my making the bed.
