What's the best watch to gift to a friend who isn't really into watches?

My friend's birthday is steadily approaching and I'm wondering what kind of watch I could get him without going over like a 300$ budget.

I'm also torn between getting something that's an everyday watch or if I should get him something dressy. For context he is consultant so he does have to dress up sometimes.

Additionally I think Quartz is definitely on the table given the context of him not necessarily being into watches and due to the budget as well.

I thought about getting him a brew watche given he's a huge coffee guy, but it might be a bit out of my budget.

Your suggestions are highly appreciated.

You can find quartz Tissot men's dress watch for about that or less online at some of the bigger grey market retailers like Jomashop.

·

Timex Q or Q GMT. The Q GMT just adds the GMT hand, the basic Q can track a second time zone via it's 12 hr bezel.

Battery hatch on the back for end user changes, VAST selection of color, look fun and sporty, but can be dressed up when needed.

Stock Steel isn't that bad, mine is now on a Forstner Komfit, cuz it's amazing 😂.

Newer first, then old stock. Mine is the Q GMT, "true" Pepsi, black dial, red/blue bezel, as it should be 😆.

An envelope with money . . .

Did they ask for a watch or show interest in wanting a watch? B/c I’ve tried this before and the watch ended up just collecting dust.

Citizen Eco Drive (~10y solar cell battery).

You can find them on Amazon for a few 100 bucks.

Friends don't buy watches for friends who aren't into watches.

I wouldn’t get a watch for people not into watches, even a quartz, I feel like it’s such a subjective thing, they might not like how it looks.

Timex or Casio, something simple to maintain, quartz, lots of size and color and style options

·

If you’re determined though, I’d get either an Orient Kamasu which is on the sports/dive side and very versatile, or the 38mm bambino if he dresses up more, both are under $300 and are good watches

·

I’d say a FW91, I gave one to a friend, and after 6-7 months he’s starting to look at automatics.

I think if you gift something expensive they might feel obligated to wear it, and a casio is familiar to everyone

One that is not working well hahaha

Seeing as they aren't really into watches, I'd personally just go with something more budget, so if they don't end up wearing it, you won't have wasted too much. Plus you could always get them something else as well then.

Have you considered an homage piece? Maybe something like this:

It's a great entry level piece that a lot of people seem to go for when first getting into watches.

Dressy, I say go Orient or Timex. Or just Timex for everyday. They have done some great retro releases and they have some automatics that are pretty good looking.

He has taken some interest but won't take the plunge himself, but I've been staying at his place for the past month (course in another city, long story) and he joined me watching watch content on numerous occasions, especially Wristwatch Revival

He has shown interest in my interest, but won't make the jump to buy a watch himself

Wasn't something I was thinking about but that's not too bad of an idea

Your heart is in the right place but...

This is a style statement towards which your friend should have input.

Sort of like purchasing perfumes and colognes for others.

I have faith in my understanding of his taste, plus I will assemble a council of mutual friends + his girlfriend to aid in my decision lol

As a coffee guy who IS a watch guy I will say that's thoughtful, but honestly the coffee connection doesn't resonate that strongly for me with Brew watches. I think you should go automatic, give him the full introductory experience. Orient Bambino 38 is a good normie watch. Maybe you could get him a Bambino and a F-91w or Casio World Time to round it out.

That's actually a very good idea, thank you!

Why would you get him a watch if he “isn’t really into watches” (to use your words)? Why don’t you get him something he likes?

He's worn a Skagen watch all his life, it's one of those hybrid smartwatch ones, but he never uses the "smart features" and the only reason he hasn't gotten a watch is that he feels like he can't justify the purchase, but as I've said replying to other people, he has shown interested in MY interest in watches so this is my way of trying to give him the bug I guess lol

Going crossover is the way to go... he will wear the Brew watch, just because he likes coffee. 😜

I like mine just because the design is great !!!

Just a thought, but if you are sure you want to gift a watch why not actually take them shopping and let them choose one. Then it's a day out as well.

Also a very solid idea, it's a bit rough where I am (middle east), not a lot of affordable watches are readily available. But honestly I really like your idea.

I hope you work something out. Good luck!

·

I wouldn’t try to surprise him with a watch; I would instead surprise him by taking him shopping for a watch (and lunch after).

·

Basically any timex or Seiko under retail
