Hey everyone,
Hope you are having a great Friday. I just started another phase of my collection, that is kind of strange, but I have a feeling I'm not the only one. I have always had the collector gene and OCD but not out-of-control OCD that causes people to suffer. I have the fun kind.
So getting back to my latest quirk; I am buying watches I have no intention to wear and just keep them in the plastic and box like a collectible for the sack of seeing it brand new forever. I did this with 3 hard to get Timex watches because when I saw them at a good price I couldn't resist. I already own them and I do wear those, but I wanted one to show how it looks untouched. In short, I own 2 of the same watches. The three mentioned are limited editions so I get to wear them and not worry about getting scratched up and still have one for my museum.
Do any of you do this?

Like any collectible thing, there is always the urge to keep it pristine. But I suppose in my own watch collecting journey I enjoy wearing the pieces I seek and find. To me, the wearing experience is part of the watch as a whole so I'm not as inclined to keep watches in pristine condition.
I buy to wear. But I can see your point. Are you thinking they'll be worth more in the future?
That's the true spirit of collecting isn't it?

Oh. no way, they are Timex and if they are worth more, it will probably be $50 more or less then I bought it for (not enough for a happy meal these days). Although I love investing in index funds, I am glad I love the hobby for that and don't have to worry about looking at my beauties as an investment. IMHO it will take the fun out of it. I do like it for future fans to see what that watch looked like brand new.
One to stock and one to rock…isn’t that the motto of every collector?

Right on my watch friend! Enjoy your watches. 🍻

Had never heard that one but man does it make sense! Only wished sometimes I could avoid wearing some of mine..

I used to go to San Diego Comic Con and buy 2 of everything. One to open and play and display and the other to stash away to keep in pristine condition.
Similarly, I'm a sneakerhead and used to buy multiples but I'm getting older now so there are only so many years left that I can keep wearing Jordans so I better enjoy them now.

Never heard this one, but I love it!

Yes! That's the idea, I just didn't explain it as well as you just did
Ahahah, understand the comics sure, but am trying to cope with my watch bug under budget X not X squared ahah
I have over 100 watches that I have accumulated over the years. No matter how new or rare they might be every.single.one has been worn multiple times.
I don't expect be on Antiques Roadshow.
Nope, wouldn't do that myself - but it's good that some of you do for future generations. And if it brings you joy that's what it's all about 🖖🏻👍🏻
I kept a Casio A171 as an unused spare because they went out of stock and became rare at the time. Now they are abundant again, but I still keep the one as it was straight from the factory because I don't need to open it.
What will you do when the battery dies?
No safe queens here. I wear all my watches, though, in a 2 to 3-year rotation! 😜🥂🍾

Since I live vicariously through you and your collection I may have to change my strategy. lol. The only emoji I can use when I see your watches is mind blown. lol
You got a watch
I got a watch

I feel collections are only relevant if they can be seen. Hence I wear all my watches.
I only have 1 watch that I do that with, and it was an accident. I had been looking for a long time for the Texas Instruments LCD 550 1978 model; when I finally found one on Ebay, it was a pair of watches.
I bought the pair, and I took the battery out of one of them, and put the watch in a ziploc bag and stuffed it into my sock drawer. Then I proceeded to actually wear the other one, although I swapped out the strap because the old TI strap was too short for my monster wrist. I put the old strap into the ziploc also.
But parts for this watch are so hard to find, that even the one I reserved for wearing doesn't get worn very often. I baby it. According to my collection-tracking app (Watchee Pro) I have only worn it 3 times since I got it a few months ago (June 29th.)
EDIT: Maybe I will wear it a few times in the coming days. Get the wear count up to at least 10. 😎
I can see why you would do it Stephen, especially when you have such a large collection.. it would probably take you months (if not years) to rotate all of your watches on a daily basis. So why not keep a couple back in pristine condition.
Unfortunately, I have more fingers than I do watches, and it would get boring pretty quickly if I didn't rotate through them all.
Remember to show us pics (even if it's just the box) of the ones your holding back 👍
Yes, I have a first world problem having to give them all of them wrist time. lol. Yes, I will definitely get around to it at some point. I have a box of 24 that are nothing but peanuts themed, then I have the Q box, the boxes of assorted watches that I hardly wear and of course, the vintage load. lol. Yes, first world problems and lucky to have them. : )
nope. But it surely reminds me Steve Carell's character in the 40 year old virgin, the movie...
I Do that with the moonswatch and will do it with the swatchpain once i get my hands on one. Theyre nice to look at in a display case and plus their build quality doesnt inspire long term use anyway😁
Full disclosure: I didn't read this post from the Timex Museum guy. I wasn't interested in the title. Now if it had said, "A Sane Thing I Started Doing . . . "
Addendum: I have since read the post. Now I'm confused because this is perfectly sane. It's exactly what a good museum curator would do.
My first watch was a Timex Mercury (?) circa 1970. I'd love to see one again. And to see a watch in its original new condition almost 60 years later is something I think every watch enthusiast would enjoy, whether they admit it or not.

Oh, now I feel better. Yes, that's the idea. Years down the road when I'm very old or not here at all, I want others to see what the watch looked like when it was brand new and never worn
