Whisky & Watches

So as a collector of things, not just watches, but other bits from military, photographic, antique and the horologically adjacent (I think I just like unique and old things).

I realised I also have a collection of different whiskies.

Even those these bottles will never be opened I can assure you I have drank those particular malts/blends before so I don’t feel like I am missing out on the tasting experience. These bottles just mark other elements of my career to date (along with certain special project watches).

So what is your dram of choice?

I'd have a lot fewer watches if it weren't for whisky.

I prefer vodka to whisky. And since nobody make a watch showing my favorite vodka drink, I plan to build one myself.

"Smokehead" got from a mate for Xmas, really rather nice. Proper smokey, lots of tanin and earthy. Not the most expensive, but I liked it.

Aberlour A'bunadh I cherish. For my peaty hit, the Lagavulin 16, Laphroig 10 and also Caol Ila. A bit cop-out, I'm a fan of Glenmorangie. Like yourself, I'd built myself a collection, but drank it all down during the covid lockdown. I've since stopped drinking single malt whisky, I found its far too moreish lol!

My watch collection is partly just a distraction so my wife doesn't discover the extent of my whisky collection 😅

Picked up these beauties from Changi a few weeks back. I love strong, complex flavors - not one dimensional (according to me) peat monsters. But stuff like the Uigeadail or this PC 10...yummmmm. Alternatively, the sherry bombs like Glenfarclas or Abunadh.

I’m always between Caol Ila and Lagavulin but would go for Caol Ila is pushed just because they are more affordable and widely available.

My favourite Caol Ila is the Feis Ile 2013, which mercifully passed under the radar and so the prices never went crazy - so I treated myself to six bottles and still have a few left somewhere. Couldn’t find them for the pic.

That’s a fraction…

I bought a lot of Scottish malt whisky in the late 90s and early 00s before prices went crazy … and then lots of the bottles I had went nuts pricewise so I ended up selling about 100 bottles at auction.

I knew I wouldn’t enjoy drinking a bottle that I had paid £125 for that gave me £2,500 at auction (some Port Ellens). And insurance wise it was a bit nuts as nothing was meaningfully covered.

I still have a very nice stash but have pretty much cleared out the crazy money (to me) bottles.

Happily supping when I can (lock down helped) and try now to focus on the affordable and drinkable (hence Caol Ila) - which was where I started before accidentally ending up in a weird place with a problem (admittedly a nice one).

Here's some military history & whiskey. A distillery just opened near me. The owner, in Delta Force at the time, was shot down in a helicopter crash and lost a leg. 18 Americans were killed. (🙏) This is widely known as Black Hawk Down.

His tribute to this tragedy, and the name of the distillery, is BHAWK. I'm most proud to have them in our community.

Nothing directly to do with watches, but I'll wear one every time I go there.

Here's their Rye...
