"Monogamy is too cruel a rule"

I wish I was a one watch guy.

Was looking at an old gent wearing a beaten up, vintage GMT master, with a beautiful patina. And thinking he's probably worn that one watch for decades.

Maybe not. But I like the romanticism of it.

Could you ever see yourself with just one watch? And if so, which? Do you own it now or is it a grail?

At the moment, I don’t see myself as a one watch guy. Have been for some years, before I got the watch bug 🤣

·

When it comes to watches I am polyamorous.

·

I often think that and remember the late 1960s-70s and my Dad's old silver Omega which I still associate with him even though the watch is long gone (very sadly a casualty of the Quartz Crisis). I actually got my grail and often think of only wearing that watch but then I look at my watch box(es) and . . .

I've always flirted with the idea of settling down. But there is just too much temptation.

If I were to be put into a situation where I could only keep 1 of my watches and become the mythical OWG, yes I could. I also own said watch. It is my Islander ISL-101 with the AmeriQuartz movement. I have modified the bezel by removing the timing bezel and replacing it with a brushed pilot style bezel from Longislandwatch.

My Dad has been wearing the same watch for about 30 years. I've never worn it but it probably means more to me than anything I own!

Love that it's one you've made your own.

I can’t see myself as being a one watch man. I like wearing watches depending on my mood, what I am doing, or what I am wearing. To me that’s what makes collecting fun.

I hear that 😉

And also, now that I’m used to having a few watches, I like to match the watch to the event/outfit.

I like having a colourful dive watch watch I’m on my summer vacation, and a dress watch or a more elegant dress watch for when I suit up 🤷🏼‍♂️

I think that Monogamy in watches is portrayed as overly romantic, and is not attainable for most people especially those deeply involved in the watch world. While I'm sure for many people who aren't as obsessed as us degenerates it is attainable, watch nerds are always searching for the "perfect watch" which doesn't exist. Instead, we get multiple watches to scratch our different itches or have turnover in our collections to keep our itches scratched (That may be the weirdest phrase I've ever typed). And there is nothing wrong with that. I don't think there should be any "best" way to go on your watch journey. I'm sure there are outliers who are into watches and do have a single-watch collection but overall if you are obsessed with watches (as most of us are) I think that it is just as "romantic" to have many watches as it is to have one. Just my thoughts on this, take it as you will.

I'm the same Ken. Just like the idea of it. Maybe one day when my moods and outfits are less varied.

If I had more reasons to suit up, I'd join you in that.

I seem to be getting more itchy these days.

Hahaha same. As a student with very little disposable income I currently have a one watch collection (although I’m hoping to expand it soon). I try to ignore the urges but they just keep getting stronger. 😂

One watch? preposterous.

Absolutely amazing watch. I don't like the modern ceramic Pepsi (colours are too muted) and have never understood why anyone would want a faded aluminium bezel on a Pepsi (madness). But this...its everything a Pepsi should be. Well done sir.

Thanks! The photos do hide a bit of wear. There are dings in the bezel and the case is a mess in places. There is some fading on my bezel but I don't notice it until I put it up next to newer GMT-Master IIs with a fresher bezel (mine is from 1978). Then you can tell there is some fading. You can't really tell how creamy the lume is either until you put a black bezel on it. Then it looks really creamy.

Greay choices. But what would you wear for the rodeo?

At the Rodeo? Are you talking the Calgary Stampede?

I’m actually looking at a one watch collection as have too many kids to pay for to have more. I’m thinking the Omega Aqua Terra. Also like the GS Snowflake but I think the omega is more versatile

I think @Max said it best. That AT is Scary addictive and easily worn anywhere. Ultimate GADA Watch

"Monogamy is too cruel of a rule".

At least switching out watches on a whim won't land me in a shallow ditch covered in lime.

Whichever outdoor activity requires the hat. Maybe you need something more rugged in the collection too??

·

Would be an RGM COE 801 :) a bit pricy, but it's a masterpiece of a watch.

I struggle to wear only one watch a day much less forever. If I had to pick one it would be either my Reverso, Longines Spirit Zulu, or Seiko Prospex SSC909. See I can’t even pick one in theory.

·

Honestly, I think most of us are one or just a few watch owners... Before being bitten by the bug... 😁

G-Shock GM-2100B can take care of that.

Yep. If we were going on functions I'd probably go down this route...

Image

But the Titanium solar moonphase would give it a run for its money...

No. It's the Tsuki Yomi.

Oh yeah that is my next citizen on the list

Ahh yes, your beautiful 1 watch to be passed down for generations, that you wear for everything: eating, sleeping, work, sport, taking out the trash, hiking, cooking... and now it's covered in scratches, stains and muck

If I had to jump into feces my 1 watch would rather I take a beater, the same way my monogamous spouse would probably rather I choose someone else other than her to jump in with me
