Views on the Certina DS

Hive mind . Would one of these be considered a better value buy than the Longines Hydrofonquest Chrono ? (Which is twice the price ) . I hear good things about Certina , but they never seem to come up in anyone’s top ten . Do they have a quality feel ? Would it feel inferior to my Glycine combat sub ?

Yes on paper, but if you subjectively prefer the Longines, you should not get the Certina.

I think Certina are a really underrated brand and think that they compete really well at their price point. I’ve only had the one Glycine Combat Sub but I’d pick the Certina over that. However, if you really want the Longinnes I’d suggest saving for that (something I’m incapable of doing), as I’d imagine that would beat it.

It’s not a very popular brand here in the US, but I was able to handle several when I was recently in Europe. I was impressed with the quality and finishing of the watch and I think they offer a great value for the money!

I have a Certina DS Podium GMT and I love it, except for the butterfly clasp. I’ve never been a fan of those, there is no micro adjust on them.

Is this a quartz vs mechanical question? Because the certina looks like a quartz and the hydrofonconquest I found was mechanical. That's your price difference....

I have this Certina chronograph. Great value watch, well finished and the green on the dial makes it pop.

I’m not sure whether it’s a match for a Longines chronograph though given the price difference.

Certina and longines are both part of the swatch group with longines being higher up the hierarchy. The certinas I have handled seem very similar to tissot and chare the same movements, personally I would save for the longines

Not really . I have enough mechanical watches (still like them )

:-) Sounds like that's your answer.

Personally I'd like a Longines so I'd get both. I see them as different enough.

What’s cool about Certina is that pretty much every quartz watch is thermocompensated, and is COSC certified. The problem I have is when they use the ETA G10 series movement that is unserviceable.

They are quite different than Longines and should be compared more with Tissot or Mido…

On a side note, I bought a Hydroconquest last year and sold it within months.

Call me crazy, but it felt like the case was rough cut and never finished, and the bracelet was the biggest disappointment of the year. I like Longines, but I don’t get why people buy the HC. From my experience, it was built like a happy meal toy. But hey! They had a “special” movement 😵‍💫

I have a Certina DS and I love it. It has a very quality feel especially the crown action. The diver's extension on the bracelet is class leading for a sub-$1,000. I have scuba dived with mine and it performed perfectly.

The Certina has crazy specs for a quartz watch. The movement has 27 jewels, thermo compensated, a 1/100 chronograph hand, and ± 10 seconds per year accuracy.

And personally I think the looks is killer.

Now I see the Longines that you are talking about. A divers Chrono with quartz movement?

Looks fantastic too! And with an under 1000 price. Tough choice.

Did you buy any of them?

You would not believe the trouble I have had selling some really nice certinas . Including a titanium divers chrono. Bought for 650 (plus import fees and VAT ) can’t sell for 500. It’s great watch but not for people who are long sighted and don’t have their glasses on

Yeah, it is not an investment kind of watch. It's a pity they don't keep their value. Sorry to hear that.

Certina are a very underrated brand in the Swatch Group...kind of like Mido.

With the Certina you are getting most of what you get from Longines for significantly less money.

Definitely both brands are great...but Certina is the better value.

The DS watches - "Double Security" (which is why they use the turtle logo) are really great watches.

Yes! Beautiful - Certina's now get more wrist time than Seiko's for me recently (dont wven know how many Seiko's I own), ❤️ the Certina DS Multi 8 is close to watch perfection for my daily needs (one of my few non wind up watches I own ironically).

Well I got one , and the problem is - without my glasses I just can’t read the time !
