An homage is ….

I don’t know! On the one hand I think it is not okay but on the other hand I think everybody is copying each other. As long if you do not pretend to be that brand (faking it), but celebrate the beautiful design by your interpretation of that design. Then it is fine. The big difference is the movement. You pay sometimes 100 times more for the original because of just an other movement. So if you really want the original then an homage wil not border because you know you have the original movement. But what do you think?

For me, like Kirby Ferguson said, "Everything is a Remix". 😎

IMO a homage is just copying a successful design..nothing wrong with that...BUT a replica is a different story..a ripoff and should be illegal ..That being said I would be willing to bet 3 out of five Rolex's I see are fake..

There's nothing wrong with an homage.

There's everything wrong with a fake.

Some worry too much about copying a design.

I don't see Rolex,Panerai,Tudor,Omega,Seiko et al. going after Pagani,Steeldive or San Martin so it seems OK to them.

Good designs should be celebrated.

If by homage you mean a cheap direct copy, yeah that sucks.

If by homage you mean a watch that is heavilly inspired by, well I don't see the problem. One way or another, there aren't many new designs, and one watch will always have similarities to others. White panda chronographs all look the same, yet they all have small details that make them unique. I will never have the money to get myself a Rolex Daytona Paul Newman, but I can get a Dan Henry 1962 for 300$. If I had the real deal I would be happy to see that people like that design and buy homages since we all love that particuliar watch. It's nice to see the differences between them, all White panda have uniqueness in them. The only ones complaining are the one with superiority complex, so I really don't give a damn about their opinions ;)

Now you just have to find two real ones and your on par statistically.

Full disclosure, I received these watches free of charge from a friend who found them in cars bought at auction. He turns old muscle cars into hot rods.

Patents expire but trademarks live longer so anything over 25 years old can be duplicated down to the last screw but the branding can not. For example the germans had a diesel cab heater they sell for $4000.00 that the Chinese also build now for $200.00 retail and the parts interchange. That's why Rolex grind off their names in the fakes they get in to repair but do not destroy the watches. A fake is only a fake when it breaks patent or trademark laws otherwise it's a homage.

Nothing wrong with an homage, for people hesitating to buy a grail piece it's also a nice way to experience the design on their wrist and in their everyday lives before comitting to spend a considerable amount of money...

Two of them still work! And remarkably well. The Day-Date is a cheap quartz movement. The battery is obviously dead. The Sub looking thing has made in China written pretty much everywhere inside the caseback. It's not a pretty looking movement but seems functional.

You are showing branded fakes, not considered homages.

Not sure which is real-they all look like crap!

They are all fakes. I was answering @Ls9009 about fake Rolexs and seeing 3 out of 5. There they are. 3 fakes.

I won't buy a fake. I have two copies.

The PD Daytona was to see if I could wear something so in your face, I thought I should figure that out before going for the real deal. I found that screw-down pushers are ridiculous, but overall it's a big thumbs up. Also I got to try out various straps that maybe I'd have shied away from if it was a Rolex.

And I just picked up a blue dial Milgauss copy by Benyar. I like the design, couldn't care less about the anti-magnetic properties. If it was designed by Hamilton or Tissot I'd be ok spending £750+ on an original, but I'd rather save the high end money for high end pieces. Bonus on the Benyar: it's a cheap auto but the timegrapher and actual wear puts it at +10/+15s per day.

Update: currently running at +3s.

For me a homage is fine if it's made by the original manufacturer ( I own a heritage Seamaster 300 ,Willard & Lunar Pilot, all true homages imho) or if it's a model that's been out of production for many years ( eg Steinhart "Steve McQueen")

Not a fan of the Chinese rebadged clone stuff, but to each their own.
