The Red One for Pentecost

You may recall that one of my collecting goals has been to acquire watches in all the liturgical colors. (There are in the neighborhood of seven, depending on which church you’re talking about and exactly how you’re counting.) This has been effective as a.) an organizing principle; b.) a reflection of my own interests and priorities; and c.) the best justification I can give my wife for why I positively had to spend more money on yet another piece of jewelry. "Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?"

After a flurry of acquisitions culminating in the white one for Easter, the only color I lacked altogether was red. And down on my end of the price list, that was probably going to mean either more bright red resin than I could necessarily imagine on my own wrist, or the subtler Orient Kamasu. I went with the Orient.

A long-time watch nerd budget favorite, this thing has been reviewed and recommended to death; I've been comforted to find that basically everything I'd heard about it was true--both the good and the not-so-good. More than any other watch in my collection, its purchase felt initially almost like an item I was ticking off a to-do list. Of course, I would strongly warn anyone else away from such an acquisition, but I won't pretend that it didn't turn out well this time! For not having been especially excited about it, I'm surprised to find myself wanting to reach for the Kamasu most mornings; its combination of good looks, solid build, and feel on wrist put it in a hard-to-resist sweet spot for me.

And now I have all the colors. I am done. I can rest.

(Pause for laughs.)

Nope: now I start planning the more discriminating upgrades and supplements to this sub-collection! Starting with green. There are a lot of green Sundays in the liturgical year, and I only have the one green dial that I'm not in love with. Once more unto the breach, dear friends!

Now that you are done collecting for the Lord, you can start collecting for yourself 😂

Of course the Orient is a great choice, especially if it's made like my Invicta Divers.

Can't wait to see what you pick out for green! This one is on my list to get:

The Sugess is choice! That particular shade of green is arresting, and has caught my eye before. The only green dial currently in the collection is this Timex:

I bought it at a great discount soon after the the collecting bug bit, specifically to wear on a red strap for the holidays, which worked out exactly as well as I'd hoped...and I haven't much enjoyed it since. It feels a shade big on my little wrist, it's pretty loud, and I haven't yet found a strap aside from the red one that I like it on!

So yeah: there's some work to be done here!

Keeping the litergjcal theme - give up watches for Lent?

Keeping the litergjcal theme - give up watches for Lent?

Or wear only a single Daniel Wellington from Ash Wednesday till Easter?

·

Great watch! I bought the same one when I was 20 and I plan on keeping it forever!

·

You've caught me lacking. I can't make up my mind about how to approach red. The Kamasu is the obvious and natural choice but it's just too similar to my 5KX.

In the long term I'll probably just cheat by getting some GMT with a relatively modest splash of colour...

Great looking Kamasu!! Heavy hitter for the price 👌👏, and I love a Kanji day wheel even if it slows my recognition slightly

I thought liturgy was some form of metallurgy, good thing I googled for clarity.

anyway, I endorse any good rationale for adding to one’s collection. And if that rationale also gets buy in from wifey, it ticks every box! 👍

I saw that Kermit already reared his smiling amphibian head, and that’s a great choice. I think Oris has some stunning Aquis green sunray dialed models as well.

My fave green bomb is my deep forest Kurono Grand Mori. Sold out, but lots on C24 for basically what it cost me. So obtainable without a surcharge.

Price is 100% for the dial and it’s worth it. it’s an incredible hand painted, hand polished urushi lacquer. crazy beautiful to look at.

I’ve had this for 2 years from my friend in Canada, love wearing it, I don’t want to give it back 😂

I respect your (probable) approach, though I've been fixed in my own mind that modest splashes don't count toward this particular goal. For me.

That said, red does seem a tricky one. There are, as always, a few really delectable ones far beyond my budget, and a bunch of affordable ones that don't really appeal. It was convenient for me that I didn't have anything too similar to the Kamasu already in my collection!

I spent more than strictly necessary to get this one from Japan because I love kanji day wheels so much!

That Kurono looks like one to think seriously about saving up for. (Ditto the Oris Kermit!) That dial is next-level. Love the strap you've got it on, too; if memory serves, you posted something about that quite a few months back, possibly when I was still only lurking here.

You should totally make a surprise trip from BC down to Brian's meetup in San Diego on Saturday so that I can see this marvel with my own eyes. :)

AHHH! - I totally want to, beyond what I reasonably should. But I'm on-call, working nights, and my kid has a swim meet. I'm so booked up it's insane, and no amount of juggling can make it work.

Of course I'm very sad - but since this thing has grown into a huge elaborate affair with celebrities and everything - and I lean more towards the introvert lane - a lower key get together at a later date might be better for me anyway.

Tentative plan to visit Socal in the fall (when weather here in Van city gets dark and wet) for some fun watch tourism and watch nerd meetups at that time!

And yup - I put a way out there Hiroshige strap on it, going handmade on everything on this watch!

Yes, I'm expecting Saturday to be a bit of a gauntlet. I don't just lean towards the introvert lane; I'm like a car on Disneyland's Autopia, kept in the lane via a metal rail! I can swerve back and forth a bit, but I can't exit! Still: holding open the possibility that I'll have an honest-to-goodness good time. I feel like if there's a crowd in which that's possible, it's this one!

Will look for you around here in the fall if those plans materialize and assuming you and I haven't become mortal enemies by then.

That strap is amazing. I can't think of what I'd wear it with! I mean, of the clothes I actually own.
