Hawaii Tragedy

UPDATE: HOW TO HELP

----------------------------------------------

WC Fam - apologies in advance for the downer post. The last couple days has been pretty tough emotionally to hear about the tragic firestorms that have hit the State of Hawaii, especially the complete devastation of the Town of Lahaina on Maui.

Though I’m not Hawaiian, I consider Hawaii my spiritual home. It is paradise on Earth and not being able to travel there during the pandemic nearly broke me. When the travel restrictions lifted last year, we took the first chance and booked a flight out to Maui and Oahu. My family and I have made so many memories there that it’s hard to fathom not being able to return to the same Lahaina. Even when they rebuild, it won’t be the same.

I’ve moved through the 5 Stages of Grief and now at the end…acceptance. It is an absolute tragedy. I’m choosing to remember some of the good times and share some of my family’s memories with you all from our last visit.

So many chickens, everywhere. 4am wake up calls.

Sunset in Kihei, looking towards Lahaina

8am beach days, taking advantage of jet lag.

Watching the sunset atop Haleakala, making JJ Abrams proud with the lens flare.

Fireball in my hand, like Goku

My silly kids at the Lahaina Banyan Tree

On the Lahaina waterfront, looking at Lanai.

![Image](data:image/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg' width='1200' height='1200'/%3E)

I’ve set my GMT and world timers to Hawaii time in memory of the people of Hawaii. The Aloha spirit is as strong as the people are kind.

![Image](data:image/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg' width='572' height='279'/%3E)

I hope this find you all well. Be good to yourself and each other.

Thank you for the images! My father in law loved travel, saw most of the world, after he retired he took his extended family on a cruise to see parts of Alaska, the second destination that he and my mom in law wanted to visit before they were too old was Hawaii which he said was best enjoyed by romantic couples, or loving families.

Make memories with the people who mean the most to you. It’s the only thing that really matters.

Beautiful post, words and photos. Same, beyond devastated - as I have deep ties/connection to Hawai’i, mostly on Oahu. I’ve been in close contact with fam/friends, and everyone is just in shock.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures. Such a painful time for the islands and those who live there 😔

·

It really is heartbreaking to see. However, living in a city that was wrecked by earthquakes in 2016, they will rebuild and with more time, recover. No, it will not be the same…but nothing ever is. Human spirit and hope will prevail. 🙏🏼

Stay strong my friend. We have a trip to Oahu and Kauai coming up and looking to give back somehow. Malama aina.

Yeah spoke to my wife and she agreed that we’ll do something constructive and give back to Hawaii as much as her and her people have given us. It’s the least we can do.

Absolutely, Hawaii has strong people and culture. They will endure but the lost of people and history will never be replaced. All we have is our memories to hold onto.

The sentiment is as lovely as your family. Thanks for sharing. Neat that you set GMT to Hawaii.

My family lived there when dad was stationed there as an officer in the Navy.

Thank you for your family’s service. Hawaii is a place of calm and serenity. The world would be a better place if we all learned to be kind and take care of nature.

You are very kind, thank you. Do they know how the fire(s) started?

·

hope all the best for people on hawai 🙏🏻🙏🏻. thx for sharing beautiful memories

·

Thank you for this post. Our family vacationed in Maui in 1989 and as children we played around that banyan tree in Lahaina, that according to reports was also not spared by the flames. The images in the news are heartbreaking. We have relatives who live in Maui and I'm still waiting for updates on their status.

They’re looking into it. The fires are not fully contained

Maui, and all of the Islands, have magic. It becomes part of your soul. Our watch community is full of thoughtful people from all different backgrounds. I have no doubt that we will all find a way to contribute back to the place that have given so much to us.

Kevin, I was a surf bum. I worked until I made enough money to leave. Sometime I wouldn’t have enough money to get home. That trip I sold my surf board and bummed a couple hundred from my Mom to get a plane ticket home. Lol. Life was pretty good until the responsibilities showed up.

You must have amazing stories from that time. 👍

I do. I did a lot of surf trips mainly in Mexico and Hawai. But Mexico was and still is my style. It’s cheap, a lot of fun and it was pretty easy to get home. Getting home for some reason was always hard for me.

Maui is by far my favorite of the islands I have been to. My wife and I honeymooned on Maui.

Same feeling for my kids and I. We're always sad to leave and my girls asked "when can we come back?" and I always tell them soon cause it'll be here waiting for them. Some things are not meant to be.

I was in Oahu on what felt like a permanent vacation. So I thought I want to live here in paradise. My friend lent me his couch to sleep on. So I got a job installing cable tv with him. I was home on the mainland 10 days later. Paradise isn't paradise when you have to go to work. 😂just saying.

I can see your perspective. The grass is always greener on the other side.

@SpecKTator has already kindly bid but I figure I'd toss this up here as well.

I am auctioning off a watch (Direnzo DRZ04 Mondial) and double matching the proceeds towards Maui Disaster relief.

It’s the least I can do. But we will do more.

·

I am so sorry, I thought there was an auction post here where people who wanted to give watches for auction could do this to benefit Maui relief. I have a box , papers, unworn , obviously pristine Seiko Seitona , which I paid 675 for and I see they have mostly held their value which I would be happy to donate to this cause . Someone please tell me what to do

There are a couple of auctions running already. Appreciate your support. There’s a link in the post for ways you can help with recovery efforts.
