Skeleton Dials? ๐Ÿ’€ โ˜ ๏ธ ๐Ÿฆด

I understand the idea behind wanting to see the main spring, bridges, wheels, gears, etc., just like an exhibition case back. But the I can't help but think that the practicality of looking at such a dial to quickly tell time would be a challenge.

Do your eyes ultimately get used to spotting where are the hands to tell time at a glance?

What do y'all think?

As long as it does not impact legibility

I think it comes down to the hands set. If it can stand out from the skeletal background then I'd be for it. I tend to think ones like the Oris example would be a No Thanks for me, but Cartier example above is done very legibly and nicely.

There normally not really for me but I feel like there is one out there that might hit different for me and Iโ€™ll obsess about it until I get it unless it an astronomical amount of money. But Iโ€™m not mad at all of someone loves them and only collects them. As far as being able to read I feel some are harder then others.

Love the idea, but legibility is important to me & they all seem to be cheap tat or Grail prices. ๐Ÿค”

How 'bout a double "skeleton"? BOOM!

That's what I thought looking at that Oris. I like their brand but wouldn't pay a few Gs for something that I feel was too busy and hard to read!

That is insane!

I am somewhere between neutral and love. Some are nice, but I would not want them to make up a significant percentage of my collection.

ยท

Legibility aside, if the skeleton look isn't done properly, the watch can look very ugly IMO

I have a couple of skeleton watches. Both bought at the same time. Find it difficult to tell time with. Now they just sit in a watch box and donโ€™t see any wrist time. I would almost class them as fashion watches.

For me it's like the date function, many a time it can ruin a watch, but if done well it can elevate it. My joint favorite watch is my orient open heart. Seeing the movement pump away is just so cool

My friend just ordered the Cartier Santos Dumont Skeleton Micro-Rotor in the first image. I canโ€™t wait to see it in person. My favorite though is the The Cartier Masse Mystรฉrieuse in the second image. But itโ€™s priced at an insane level of around a quarter million dollars! ๐Ÿ’ต ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ธ

Wow, I havenโ€™t seen one in the flesh but I think the knock it out of the park with this type of watch, nobody seems to come close.

Love them if done right. For me nothing beats Zenith.

A little bit much for me perhaps but I admit, I've seen some done very tastefully. Put's me in the neutral camp I guess.
