Downsizing but Upgrading ❓

Well guys I made a mistake went to my local AD and got hands one with a couple of Rolex Models which in itself is a good thing. But here is my problem.

I got to experience this beauty here and completly fell in love. Talk about impulse purchase mistakes…. But i feel like this one would be diffrent I swear! 😂

I know this is by far one of the most ridiculos watches that there is, a gold Daytona is not really a understatement piece neither is it in any form a versatile piece… hear me out though this watch just screams „Fuck you“ and „I dont thnik about you at all“ which is a fun vibe for this hobby since everyone should wear what he appreciates, likes and values.

This daytona is the ultimate IDGAF watch because it is just so diffrent from other daytonas the matt black dial and the oyster braclet scream sport the yellow gold case on the other hand lends itself more towards a luxury aspect and combined with those red accents it really creates a unique appearance and god damn it really works well 🔥I feel like this could be a watch collecting journey milestone or turning point where I sell a lot of pieces to make room for fewer but more „jaw dropping“ ones. Overall I am just telling you this because no one else is as crazy about little pieces of metal that make a ticking noises like you guys so i am sharing my dilemma here for you to experience first hand 😂

I am just not sure if I can pull it off because it tends to be a big leap going from 10-15 pieces to maybe 3-4 but I feel like I would appreciate the ones that would stay a lot more 😌Also considering i hardly wear anything else besides my Pelagos and Explorer 2 these days 🤔

Have you ever been in that situation where you think about downsizing but upgrading at the same time 🙌🏻I know prefrences here differ a lot but I am curious what your takes are on this topic. Anyway stay safe guys appreciate your thoughts 🙏🏻

Greetings Simon :)

I have considered this strategy recently myself. It is however a daunting task in terms of labour & decision making. In theory I could sell 90% of the watches I have & then have the pick of some of the high end watches most people dream of.

The size of the task is huge & to what end? I think I would lose a huge amount of the enjoyment I have in the many different watches I currently own by getting rid. I also don't feel that I would be anymore content by having 2 or 3 high quality watches. I think in time I'd only start to repurchase some of the classic watches I have now.

I have that thought once in a while when I get overwhelmed on choices to wear.. I rather have few and love and appreciate it more..

Same here...I would have the same approach of downsizing to those I really love and use plus the big purchase. 👍

The dilemma of a true "collector"...thanks for a truly conundrumy post! The simplest question is the toughest one to answer..."What do you really want?" Been collecting for 30 years, have over two dozen watches, multiple brands, metals and complications. Don't own a Patek, AP, Vacheron or other higher $$$ piece. Look at them ALL the time, could afford it, never pulled the trigger. Personally don't see the "value" in them. Had a friend who absolutely coveted an FPJ, couldn't afford it so collected "lesser" brands for 20 years, saved his $$$ eventually sold all other watches he had and bought his FPJ. Happy for him! He has what he wants.

Personally, I have never sold/traded a watch, "lost" a few of them in a divorce...silver lining was a chance to "reset" my collection. I can't bring myself to get rid of anything in my collection to "make room" for something else. Might change if I see a high $$$ piece I absolutely must have...keep obsessively looking for one! (Writing this makes me question my sanity...)

The single Rolex that was an itch that I never managed to take care of was an El Primero white dial Daytona from the early 90s, there was a list and a token deposit needed but you could be assured of one within a few months, not a situation that suited my temperament at the time. A friendly ad had a shop display model that he allowed me a few days to try: a gold Daytona fitted to a croco strap and gold folding clasp all OEM, I wore it for a day and decided that I wanted the white dial all steel iteration. I sort of regret not buying the slightly goofy gold Daytona at the time, I was reminded of that opportunity after reading your post.

Thank you for your intressting point, I dont feel like in my case I would miss most watches since the ones I would sell right now at least are all watches that don‘t hold any sentimental value. So selling those would be just a bit of work, probably on ebay or maybe chrono24 but I ll see into that when I have made my decision. I never sold a watch till now so I can not speak about any remorse after selling one this really is way too difficult decision for a hobby that is really not that importan I feel 😂But thank you for your take on it stay Safe!

I have that thought once in a while when I get overwhelmed on choices to wear.. I rather have few and love and appreciate it more..

That is exactly the same for me I tend to wear 2-3 watches at the moment anyway (except for formal events a dresswatch). So i feel like all the others just collecting dust is a bit overwhelming and sad.

Thanks for your take on it!
