I have my own judgements, reasonings, and perceptions, but before I influence the poll with those insights I just wanna see what the general community thinks! Gimme your โwhyโsโ in the comment!

Have any other Rolexes? If not, you will always have an itch to own one. Most here will say the JLC is the better watch, but it wonโt scratch the itch (which by your presentation I can tell you have)
Of the two watches pictures I think the JLC looks better. I do not think you can go wrong with either but voted for the watch I like the looks of better.
I don't really like either of them.
But if I had to choose then the JLC, because I dislike those different colours on the OP.
Now if it was the OP 124300, or the 114300 black or white, that would be my choice.
Love the Grape ๐
Try both on and buy the one you like. No point asking others for opinions. You know deep down inside what you want, get that, otherwise you will always have a yearning for the one you want and will not be satisfied.
Seiko! Its always the answerโฆ
Polaris. By miles. Just "better" & hasn't got the stigma of being a Rolex ๐๐
What other watches do you own? What fits best for your lifestyle? Have you tried them on? Both good choices and brands I own. I think blue in general is more versatile.
What's your wrist size? The Polaris is 41mm and the OP is 39mm

Itโd potentially be my first Rolex :-)

I currently have a Speedy and a Longines Spirit

Iโve small wrists, only 5.75 inches but Iโve tried both on and they both fit quite well :-)
I'm team polaris. I'm bias. I own one. It's a better watch. Rolex does have a certain appeal.
I remind myself that much of that appeal is marketing and manipulation via advertising.
The best thing to do is to see both on the wrist.
I will also state that leaving the store with the jlc as opposed to waiting on the rolex was really nice.
I love the green dialed Ploaris
Given your wrist size, the JLC Iโm sure looked good trying it on, but I think youโll feel differently living with it. Iโd go with the Rolex because the size will fit your wrist size better and Rolex is a classic way to celebrate your 40th.
Iโd go JLC over Rolex any day. More individuality. Not the watch everyone else already has on.
JLC is a better watch than the entry Rolex. Less BS from ADs. May not hold its value as much but if youโre buying to wear just get it and enjoy
JLC in a heartbeat
Both are very nice. The JLC is a better watch. My answer is try them on then decide
If you own Rolex already get the JLC.
Buy the one that you like best. Ultimately, itโs going to be the watch that youโll be wearing. Thatโs my 2 cents!
Iโm torn here. I think the JLC is undoubtedly the better watch. But Rolex has a certain โI made itโ quality that is fitting for a 40th birthday. Grape probably wouldnโt be my first choice if you go Rolex, but you canโt go too wrong with either of these two watches youโve suggested.
So cool to get so much feedback in such a small amount of time, thank you all! So let me give you my insights, my birthday is in March and currently the two watches are at a tie ๐ Iโve tried both on and aesthetically I think they both suit me well from appearance and also โwatch personality.โ
Favoring the Rolex:
For a life milestone, I feel like adding the crown to my collection is just โthe thingโ to do.
Purple is my favorite color actually.
I like that itโs a more playful Rolex, pretty unexpected to see a purple one!
For me personally, this is THE OP model that speaks to me most loudly, with its rhodium twin being a close second.
Obviously, this caters to the โRolex itchโ many have mentioned.
Favoring JLC:
The watch nerd in me knows that the JLC is the better horological piece and the brand has heritage bleeding from its ears.
The dial literally blew me away. No online pics do this dial justice, you gotta see it in person! Iโve never fallen so hard over a dial ๐
I like that I can get it new without Rolex hassle, yes JLC spike prices recently, and yes Iโd save significantly pre owned, etc but you only turn 40 once so YOLO lol. I like the idea of the watch โstarting its journeyโ with me because it is a milestone.
Both are within the budget, so now itโs a matter of making a decision ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
Your thought process is in the right place. Another question to ask yourself: which of these can you see yourself wearing when you are 50 years old?
Get the Rolex new as a milestone watch then save and buy the Jlc used later
If you own Rolex already get the JLC.
Donโt own either brand yet :-)

Good point :-)

Donโt think Iโll have much getting a new OP before March :-( at least where I live Iโve been on a list for 13 months thus far and radio silence. The AD here answers when I inquire but they never have updates on my status ๐ข
Makes the JLC an easy choice then.
Getting a used watch is fine. That leg of its journey starts with you!
Based on these two specific pieces, the JLC. I like numbered dials. And not a big fan of the Rolex dial color.
Polaris because itโs perfect in every way.
