When does “wrist presence” become “helicopter pad?”

So I’m in serious trouble with the Breitling SOH 44mm 😬

Rationale: 1) My wife wears rose gold (incl wedding / engagement ring) and id like something that has rose gold elements to complement for date nights, but isnt too OTT. 2) I’ve wanted a SOH since I was 20 (now 42). 3) Colour matched date wheel at 6pm is the dream. 4) Has the B20/ Kenissa in-house with 70hr PR. 5) Look at the f****g thing!!

Downsides: 1) The Milanese bracelet is definitely ‘a statement’. 2) It’s £5.2k list, realistically £4.6k target price. Most I’ve dropped to date is 3200. 3) At 44mm and 14mm thick she’s a chunky girl.

I‘m 6‘3, have a 19cm / 7.5 inch wrist and wear a 43mm avenger GMT as a daily and SuperOceans do tend to wear a little bit smaller than the specs suggest.

I’m just wondering if this is gonna be a semi-dress piece whether I shouldn’t be going for something that’s in the 39-40 range.

Who else wears big pieces in dressy situations proudly?

Or should I stay on trend and go for something more diminutive (not short of options at the 5k point!!)?

Thoughts / pushbacks / enablements please, folks!

I think this is a fine idea.

You can pull it off with your wrist, as long as your shirt cuffs aren't too tight. It is a handsome watch.

I will note that I think that Milanese works at cross-purposes with the rose gold. The bracelet is extra silver/steel due to its many surfaces. The black/rose gold dial and bezel is more subdued.

With what you shared you should definitely pull the trigger. Personally I am not a fan of the bracelet.

Ah, dressy saucers - my favorite pet peeve! 😉 Given how notoriously obsessive I can get when advocating for smaller watches, take my thoughts on this with a grain of salt.

All I can say is that I do think that 40mm to sub-40mm dress divers do tend to work better on a wrist of your size. However, it doesn't look totally obnoxious to me. I only wish Breitling made this exact same model in 39mm so that I could finally add a Breitling to my "wanted list". It's a gorgeous watch after all...

Dude!  That Super Ocean Heritage is gorgeous and fits your wrist perfectly!  You should go for it.  Obligatory...

I hear you. There is a 42mmm but with more text in the dial and a white date wheel so it’s not nearly as appealing.

im Tempted by the 57, but wasn’t as wowed by it when I tried it in in person 🤔

That’s super kind big man. I like your “devil-may-care” kinda attitude 😈

Going smaller you mean? Any recommendations that hit the brief?

You know what… I wonder about getting it in the black rubber strap and saving £700. could always add a Staib mesh if I really wanna experiment with blinging to the max ⭐️

I mean if Shia is so insistent… then who the heck would I be to argue?!
😃

thanks man

I mean, what does your wife think? I think her opinion is probably going to be the most important one here. You obviously like the watch yourself, but you're also buying it for her a little bit - you want something that will compliment her jewelry. Since you'll be wearing it on date nights with her, she's going to be the one you're trying to impress. Get her opinion.

She likes the watch but not the bracelet. So I'd be wearing it on the rubber strap / alternatives when we're out together. Oh what's that?? MORE money to spend on accessories...?? DOH!!

Sounds like a win-win to me! You get a watch you always wanted, it serves as a reminder of your wife's love, the rose gold accents remind her of your love, she thinks you look good wearing it, and straps are cheap.

I mean when you put it like, i guess I should just punch in my pin details immediately  💸 🤣

Damn, that’s a spicy piece. I personally really like Milanese bracelets, and think it looks ballin’ with that SOH. Nothing wrong with being a little be G on date night 😉

·

A large case/dial size more or less rules out a number of watches for me. If the watch gets too big I feel like a soccer player or a car salesman. But I'm even more sensitive when it comes to dress watches compared to divers.

Ahhh cr*p… the universe seems to be speaking! Look at what random rob just posted on YouTube 😬😬

It’s a tough one hey?! Maybe I get this and then save up for a tank solar beat to balance out the collection 🤷🏽‍♂️

Wrist circumference is irrelevant, what counts is the width of your wrist in top down view + your overall appearance: If the lugs aren't close to overhanging your wrist or at least don't overhang (danger territory), then you are good to go.

For date nights I actually find this a very nice piece of man jewellery. For anything seriously formal this is not the right watch.

Wise words big man. Much appreciated. 👊🏼👍🏻
Is it a piece you already own? How you finding it?

Ultimately, the final say and choice is up to you. I'm a big fan of Breitling as a whole. I don't believe numbers tell the whole story. The biggest difference, like many have stated, is your wrist width not circumference in relation to the total lug to lug distance. For instance, my wrist is 6 3/4 and I've worn my Breitling Navitimer on a leather strap as a dress option. Looks great.

I dedicated a whole section to wrist presence in my review. Scrub to 7:50 mark and judge for yourself: https://youtu.be/bPKQmjTvJic

In the review you'll see it on the bracelet. I also have the leather strap, and the rubber strap as well (I'm wearing it on the rubber strap as I type this) see?

For something completely out of left field, that's also dressy, and sub $6K, you could consider going down the JLC Reverso or Cartier Tank route!

You’re a soothsayer, sir! In that, one hundred percent the alternatives in my mind to going for the SOH as a dress piece were the DuoFace and Tank Must! 🤯👍🏻

Really appreciate the breakdown you offered above. Your Navi is gorgeous and - as you say - fits super well, defying the raw numbers!!

Subbed to your channel and keep up the good work 👍🏻

·

It wears smaller than it sounds Because the lugs tapper down sharply at the edge and reduces the lug-to-lug width. My wrist is 6.25” and I wear the 44mm SOH stainless steel. It looks perfect on your wrist! As @HotWatchChick69 mentioned, Make Your Dreams Come True!!!

You're too kind! And fantastic alternative choices you have (great minds, am I right?) I really appreciate the sub and the kind comment you left as well.

It's a wonderful hobby, full of options, add to that the wide world of straps and bracelets and basically you can triple every watch in existence because changing the strap has such a massive impact on the look and feel of a timepiece. So I try to help others see that it's rarely black or white - there's so much nuance to take into consideration (personal taste, wrist width, lug to lug, case shape, ratio of dial to bezel, etc.) all things that ultimately affect how YOU feel with the watch on. At the end of the day, the fact that we can even have this conversation, about watches, is a fortunate one and we should appreciate just that simple fact, and then proceed to buy what brings us the most joy 👍

Cheers mate, excited to see what you end up purchasing 🤝

I have the SOH2 in Steel and Red Gold in 42 mm.. absolutely love it
