A GMT is the best GADA (?)

Yes, I do think a GMT is the best option for a GADA.

You may or may not travel; but did you buy a diver even though you have never been in the ocean? Did you buy a chronograph and have never used the stopwatch function? Here’s a couple reasons most people could get more utility from a GMT than from another type of sport watch.

Something that a GMT has is 24 hour markings. That’s useful for people who may use 24 hour time in their job. It isn’t just the military that uses 24 hour time. The aviation industry does too. So does healthcare. So do first responders. At least in the United States there are many industries that use 24 hour time. Having 24 hour time markings could be useful to many people. Maybe they could use a field watch(?), but the second hour hand could also be useful for many people.

Obviously people who travel, for work or pleasure, might use a second hour hand. However others might also. What about people who work in one country and support a manufacturing plant on another continent? What about people who work in a virtual or distributed team spread over multiple time zones? What if you have major clients in other time zones?

Tree are more people who might find some utility in the 24 hour markings and second hour hand than there are who will ever use a dive watch for diving or a chronograph for timing (especially those of use who have 1/8th second chronographs and not 1/10th second ones😂).

If you really want a giver, I would suggest trying a diver style GMT (example my Christopher Ward Trident in the pic). If you like field watches, what about the newer Seiko Alpinist GMT?. Or a dressier watch like my Credor. GMTs come in a variety of styles, but all have the 24 hour and second hour hand functionality.

If you haven’t tried one, I would recommend doing so. Anyway, at least it may be an excuse to buy just one more watch😂🤣🥳

It is a conundrum 🤣

I like the idea, but there is a small problem right? I don’t think a GMT watch can be 24 hour marking and a GMT function, it can only do 24 hour markings or a GMT function. Because the only way to do 24 hour markings is to sacrifice the 2nd time zone and set the GMT to show local time.

I don’t get your point. To be a GMT requires having some type of 24hour mark for tracking the time with the second hour hand 🤔

Totally. I just mean that you lose the GMT if you want 24-hour local time (because you’d be “using up” the GMT hand on local time), and you lose the 24-hour local time if you point the GMT hand at a different time zone. I totally agree that you get those functions, just not at the same time.

As you say, I have kept everyone of them for now 😂

It's pretty rare but I love the second timezone and minute bezel that Serica does on their diver. Best of both worlds!

·

Absolutely agree and I’m doubling down with quartz. Set it and forget it (sans the date).

You got a solid point. Unfortunately i personally hasn't found any GMT that really speaks to me until now. Still being drawn to simple 3 hands watches so far.

It’s all about the search anyway 🥳

Recently purchased this GADA watch. Gmt's make great all round watches.

I have to agree - as much as I enjoy divers and field watches, a GMT function is more practical (to me). In a way, it's aspirational as it reminds me to try and travel more! I agree with the above poster that Grand Seiko's 9F is a great 'set it and forget it' option. I may be a bit biased though 🙂

The GMT hand dominates the dial and is the first thing I see when looking at most GMT watch. Perhaps that’s the point of a GMT but I can’t see how that can be a GADA watch. A GMT such as a Sinn 856 where the GMT is executed subtly could easily be a GADA.

Personally I've no justification for a GMT whatsoever - but I do rather fancy one of the new Alpinist GMT's, just because I like the look... & that's reason enough for me 😜👍🏻

·

Nice watch. I dont care with GMT as GADA watches. I think it complicates the dial. Besides quick math solves the time differences. Love that watch though.

·

I Love the GMT complication, even though I don't travel, I use that GMT function to avoid bothering and not sending messages at unwanted times to friends who live in another time zone, I only have these 3

Good point. There are some GMT watches though that account for this by having a rotating bezel as well as printed 24-numerals somewhere on the dial.

Does a worldtimer count? GMT (UTC) is in there! So are a bunch of other times too. Add in Solar and quartz, and you've got a nice GADA option.

I'm especially fond of this worldtimer because the inner ring advances with the hour hand, so no need to set a bezel against the local time each time you want to find the time in Venice or sonething.
